IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. It would seem that one of our so called Town Councillors: ***** ***** has at last got his wish to kill mature trees in the remembrance garden and have owls carved into the remaining stump. Let me explain: There was no jurisdiction to have that tree killed. It was not ill and nor did it pose any kind of danger to the public. It was a beautiful living cherry tree that provided a beautiful background to the memorial garden. I fail to see in any way how anyone can gloat over carved owls on a dead tree, and think they are beautiful, when the tree was intrinsically beautiful and provided home to wildlife and likely a roost to real owls. Regarding this carving and given that ***** ***** is a councillor you would think he would have sense not to go about calling the public idiots, as he has done on an alternative social media site. I would have thought that councillors should act with respect to the citizens that they represent; but no, he clearly has chosen not to be that kind of person. I think it is about time he stood down, as he is not fit, to represent our community. As penance, he should carry out community service planting more trees to offset the carbon sink of the cherry tree. Lead by example. note __________________________ This post has been edited to remove the name ***** ***** The Town Council had nothing to do with the owl carving or the felling of the cherry tree. BDMC owns the memorial gardens and maintains it. The tree in question was felled because it was diseased. Whether you agree with the owl being carved in the tree stump is a matter of personal choice and is perhaps another debate. Admin |

Corky Yorky. There has to be more to this story, than a councilor under his own direction cutting down a perfectly good tree "why" was it done? anyway a photo of the owls. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) quoteI will not tolerate abuse of individuals on this forum. Please stop it! Peter..there has been no abuse of anyone than that by the said councillor. If you care to even look on the other social media of Silsden you shall find the said councillor specifically calling members of the public idiots. I have not abused the councillor in question; so get your facts right before you start deleting any names or posts. He needs to be named and shamed. If you knew anything about trees, which you clearly do not, all trees live with disease, just as we do, and cope with it. As a fully trained arboriculturalist, that tree was not causing any harm or indeed required any requirement to be felled. It had no physical reason to be felled and certainly was never a danger to the public. Many ornamental trees, especially cherries such as that one, carry a disease known as bacterial canker, but that does not mean that the tree, requires to be felled. they can live many years without any specific problem arising. Maybe we should fell the many other trees that carry specific disease, such as the conker tree, or indeed the Ash tree, with which are locally common. Where do we stop? The answer is to live with them, not to fell every tree at a whim. It is far better to have a diseased tree than not to have one at all. You might look at the the owl carvings and think what a clever job has been done to the stump, but there was nothing clever about killing a tree, which served a very good purpose. How can anyone with any decency of understanding look at the owls and see anything beautiful in a dead tree, that should have been alive. You are also abusing your position by censoring people who have freely overstepped their position on the town council. If you had any decency you should reinstate the said person., and let them comment on why they said what they did. Get your facts right. I also never directly said that the Town Council had anything to do with the tree. Whether they did or didn't it doesn't matter, but for a councillor to call their constituents idiots is idiotic in itself. They should apologise at the next meeting. |

Bugger all. Killing a tree is not good for Silsden nor any town. Can't see this happening in forward thinking Addingham. It's no wonder Silsden folk are jealous of them over the hill. It would seem the only changes happening in Silsden are dead ones. You reap what you sow..looks like Silsden is going to be a dead end town. IWhen are you leaving anyhow? By the way I come from Yorkshire, a county supposedly full of great folk; what happened to you? |

Would I be right in thinking that when a tree is removed a new one has to be planted. anyone know if this was done for the said tree. |

I doubt if it's a requirement Wheelaman but it would be a 'good thing' if another cherry sapling could be planted nearby. I'll message the 'Friends of Silsdens Green Places' group and ask if it's something they could organise. |
