This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

This morning I saw 3 workmen carefully removing stone from the parapet of the bridge over the beck (is that Clog Bridge?) apparently to make a gateway to the new house that they've squeezed in behind the undertakers.

I can understand why they've done it but who gave them permission to alter the fabric of this Silsden landmark?

It's a pity the builders don't understand, or appear to care, about traffic markings etc and continue to cause an obstruction at busy times at the end of Howden Road.

I suppose it'd be too much to hope that they might get a ticket happy :)

Looking at the bridge again what they've done is to lower the height of the wall in front of the house by stealing a row of stone, making a gap for the gateway and using the stone removed to build up a side wall.

I wouldn't think this would matter if they owned the bridge but this just looks like they are alterng it to suit themselves, stealing the stone, and don't care that they are altering a public structure for their own benefit.

Don't you think that Silsden Council should be concerned about this?

I don't know if the bridge is "listed" at all but it is certainly a public structure and nobody should be allowed to alter it without planning permission and the opportunity for people to express their opinion.

just a thought grianan but have you thought of contacting either planning department or silsden council to express your concerns they can`t have eyes everywhere and rely on members of the public to report things like this

this post has been edited 1 time(s)

Is it a public structure?

Like "chaz" says "Grianan" ask planning, they agreed the plans. Building control inspected it! Ask them the question.

Before you speak to planning read this document though - councilminutes.bradford.gov.uk/Minutes/docs/2004PLANKLY/PLK2SEPDOCF.PDF

Thanks for your helpful postings people, especially the link to the planning stuff Alan.

However the purpose of my posting was really to stimulate discussion and to ask for your opinions on this, whether you feel that the aethetic line of the bridge parapet should be allowed to be altered for this purpose.

I guess there's little interest in it that though.

In the grand scheme of things I suppose it isn't all that important, I just wonder where the steady chipping away at the fabric of Silsden will leave it... wink ;)

Looks fine to me, not sure what the problem is. Clog bridge is not so old or had a battle fought there (unless someone does know of the Battle of Clog Bridge).

All the modern cars parked around old Silsden are a bigger eyesore. There should be a planning regulation that requires the car parked outside a house to be the same age as the house wink ;)

Personally I don't think they should have been allowed to build there at all. That was the general attitude of the Town Council I seem to remember. But, sadly, they are only able to make comments in accrodance with planning rules as you will see in the minutes.

as far as im aware that part of silsden is a conservation area
so im supprised they were allowed to use the building materials they have or change the bridge
personally i think they should be made to put it back how it was

Clog Bridge 2007

I think the bridge parapet has been lowered on safety grounds to allow cars coming out of the development a view of oncoming traffic.

By the looks of that picture the bit outside the house is the original height with a bit over the beck having been raised at some time.

Did someone fall over at some time?
