Lancaster University offer an email alert facility when the Northern Lights may be visable from the UK. Signup at the bottom of the page at this address aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/ |

Look to the north when you get the alert. Apparently it's best if you are on a hill, where you can see the stars and away from light pollution.  |
