Topic : Dig up the pavements! |
|
| Fred |
DIG UP THE PAVEMENTS and just have a road. It really annoys me when I’m using a pavement (to walk on, isn’t that what pavements are for?) only to find my way blocked by a parked car. Usually the only solution is to walk round it via the road! So why not dig up the pavements on the side streets and share the carriageway? Pedestrians would be able to walk down the middle of the street and share the right of way with vehicular traffic. Shared access would slow the traffic down, this must be a safer solution than having to walk around vehicles abandoned on the pavement, or risk getting knocked walking along narrow pavements when a vehicle squeezes past. It would obviously not work on all side streets which have a high volume of through traffic but it doesn’t take much thought to name a road near you which would be better without pavements. |

Well said "Fred". We have some new neighbours in our road, with the biggest drive in the street. What do they do, park their cars so far on the pavement, on the corner, so that people have to walk round in the road! I'm sure that our PCSO will have a quiet word with them sometime |

If you have a drive then use it but given the number of house built before so much car use its becoming a problem. The choice is sometimes block the road and risk fire engines/ambulances not getting through or block the footpath which makes someone walk an extra 15 yards.Having spent time as a wheelchair pusher I would still say keep the road free. |

However it is illegal to park on the pavement. It is also illegal to park so as to cause an obstruction - which means there is no 'right' to park on the road even outside your own house. Some people do have drives but they just don't use them enough! |

If the pavements are dug up where will the dogs go to the loo? |
|
| Fred |
You never see dog mess in the middle of the road, and there are less potholes in the middle of the road, and the road gets salt put on it when it's icy. DIG UP THE PAVEMENTS it's a win win solution - you know it makes sense! |

The Dutch town where they got rid of traffic lights has done that. Pedestrians and traffic use the same space, so have to go at the same speed. Something similar happens in Leeds towards the end of the working day when vehicles have access to the pedestrian zones - a pedestrian speeds. Not sure how well this would work through Silsden, but it would be a could spot for such an experiment. Of course, there cannot be any parking, just stopping to set down or pick up goods and people. It is true by the way that technicaly any vehicle parked on a highway, yellow line or not, is causing an obstruction. The abuse at the bus stop opposite the Robin Hood needs sorting. |

Parking or stoping as some people do not know are two seperate things so the people who stop across from the Robin and outside the cash machines (on the wrong side of the road )I hope will start to use the car parks in Silsden then everybody will be save and trafic will flow with less problems. |

The parking on side street pavements seems to be getting worse. Some of the worst offenders appear to be the owners of 4 x 4s Is it because they can park on the pavement, can't/don't walk or just don't want their precious possession, which is not a work related vehicle, scratched or damaged? DIG UP THE (side street) PAVEMENTS and we can all share the road .... you know it makes sense! Perhaps a more practical solution would be to remind these selfish car owners that pavements are for people and they should park on the road - write a note and stick it on your pavement hogger's vehicle today. |

Dig up the pavements? The council will have to at some point because they (especially the kerbstones) are damaged by vehicles parking on them. People who park on the pavement are being either ignorant or selfish and inconsiderate. |

It really amazes me that people seem to think that it is acceptable to park their cars half on the pavement... it is almost as if they think that is the correct way to park their vehicle! Are there any driving instructors out there who can tell us why this seems to be happening? |

It is not an offence to park a car on a footpath so long as there is sufficiant room for a wheelchair or a double buggy to get through. HGV's and buses are not allowed to park on the path at anytime! If you look on Gloucester and Kent avenue's you will see that the path is made wider so it can take cars and still leave room. |

quoteIt is not an offence to park a car on a footpath so long as there is sufficiant room for a wheelchair or a double buggy to get through. ... There is a huge difference between what is 'illegal' and what is acceptable. What beggars belief is that some drivers park half on the pavement when there is absolutely no conceivable reason to do so, as if they believe that that is the correct thing to do!!! If you look around you'll see cars parked in this way even where the road is wide enough to have almost three lanes of traffic. |

When out with my son in his pushchair, I used to clout cars parked on the pavement without hesitation. Why should I be forced into the road because of their selfish actions? I don't do it any more, though. He's 30, and it would be a bit of a tight squeeze for him. |

When Gloucester, Kent & Cornwall Avenues were built they were true avenues ie tree lined. They also has grass verges and in the council agreements, tenents had to tend the grass verges. Then people became car owners and the roads were not wide enough to allow double parking and as a cheapest option the council removed the grass to allow cars to park with two wheels offroad. I call this acceptable parking!! |

As a mother I have gone on the road with my pushchair to avoid parked cars. However, I do not mind as generally CAR drivers should be driving slower on the roads! If you are driving up a narrow street/road you should take care as pedestrians and animals are around. Our road is narrow, our car has had wing mirrors taken off, people keyed our car and our next door neighbour had their car wrote off twice due to people going to fast up and down the narrow roads. The people across have to be careful to step out as vans/lorries mount the path and could hit them if they stand outside there own home! IF some of us did not put two wheels on the path then there could easy be a fateily with the people who come out of there houses as people take short cuts and go fast up the narrow roads. If our car was fully on the road the vans/lorries get closer to the houses, they have even wripped for sale signs down as they drive past!!! Perhaps drivers should drive more slowly and consideratly. I fully appreciate the wheelchair/pram situation, however you should look at the bigger picture as car parkers dont do it on purpose to annoy people (well I dont). I am thinking of my neighbours and there is a path on the other side of the road that can be used. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) if they cant be safely parked on the road then they should`nt be parked there, parking illegaly on the pavement is not the answer |

Going over national speed limits over speedbumps is illegal, people do it and get away with it! Slow down world make the roads safer. |
