This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Why are solar panels allowed in the Silsden Conservation Area? Surely the idea of a conservation area is to protect the viaual appearance of the buildings in the oldest parts of Silsden.

The roof of Kirkgate cafe has a large array of solar panels which look very ugly as you enter Silsden from the Keighley direction.

I looked for planning permission for solar panels to be fitted on 18 Kikgate (Kirkgate Cafe) but couldn't find any record of planning application or planning permission. This is in a conservation area so it should have planning permission. sad :(sad :(

Looks like planning permission is not needed according to the interweb www.planningportal.gov.uk

They say
"Roof and Wall Mounted Solar Panels

The following limits apply to roof and wall mounted solar panels:

Panels should not be installed above the ridgeline and should project no more than 200mm from the roof or wall surface.
If your property is a listed building installation is likely to require an application for listed building consent, even where planning permission is not needed.

Wall mounted only
- if your property is in a conservation area, or in a World Heritage Site, planning consent is required when panels are to be fitted on the principal or side elevation walls and they are visible from the highway. If panels are to be fitted to a building in your garden or grounds they should not be visible from the highway."

It sounds legit, so lets hope for a sunny & greener summer

From the website www.theecoexperts.co.uk/solar-panels-conservation-areas

Overcoming the Hurdles of Bureaucracy

Just because you live in conservation area does not mean that you cannot have solar panels on your property. However, you will need a lot of determination to overcome some of the hurdles that your local council may put in front of you. The purpose of a conservation area is not to prevent all development but rather to enable careful management so that the character and appearance of the locality is maintained. General planning policies do support the use of solar panels but it is very dependent on the nature of the conservation area and how well it is integrated into the building. Meaning how visible the panels are. If there are other buildings in the area that have solar panels then an application is likely to be more successful, than if you are the only building applying for permission. However, no two applications or conservation areas are the same.

Most solar panels are installed on the roof, however they can be sited on the side elevation wall of a property. In conservation areas they need to be in a position that makes minimal impact to the surrounding area and appearance of the property. You can also have stand alone panels but in a conservation area they must not be visible from the highway.

To sum up, A greener environment should be actively encouraged, but not to the extent of ruining some of our areas of natural outstanding beauty. A balance must be reached.

It looks like if you live in a conservation area and would like to install solar panels then you should put in for planning permission. It could well be granted IF they do not make a visible impact on the area

The Silsden Cafe solar panels can be seen from the canal bridge.sad :(

In a conservation area planning permission should be applied for and there doesn't appear to be any record of any such application. sad :(

conservation site, if you people had lived here 100 years or even 200 years ago you would have been on your high horses about the canal being dug through silden, a main road through silsden, and oh my god mills being built in silsden, new houses being built we would all be living in mud huts if you had your way and leave off the cafe they are just trying to save money on energy costs so the can stay open and deliver a service to the people of silsden. This is the problem with middle class green party people when working class people take up what they are preaching they do not like it angry I say cover the nab in wind turbines I am so mad about the soler panel moaning I am now going to ring up about having them put on my roof so stick that in your pipe and smoke it laugh :D
