From the Keighley News - Thursday 26th February 2009

A man is appealing for Silsden people who might be able to help him uncover the truth about an old town myth.

George Watson, of Breakmoor Avenue, Silsden, grew up with the belief that the Keighley Road playing fields were entrusted to the people of Silsden decades ago and the rights lie in the hands of four elderly trustees.

BUT where are the Keighley Road Playing Fields?

Oh dear Peter this is a REAL can of worms! happy :)

The clerk to the council did try to investigate this but could find nothing out, as I understand it.

The fields are I believe are the sports clubs grounds, or part of them.

I think this is one of those urban myths, but I'd be very interested if anyone could tell us anything different!

Just as a p.s. to my last post.

It is my understanding when anyone applies for a lottery grant that they have to prove conclusively ownership of the land.

I would really be amazed if there is anything in this myth, but I have been wrong before wink ;)

A real can of worms I would think.Calling the trustees elderly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
My understanding is that it was left to trustees to look after so the sports clubs Silsden AFC, Silsden Cricket Club etc.I once enquired about using the football pitch but was told the rules laid down only allow for games involving Silsden AFC to be played.
In effect it was left for use of the Silsden sports clubs rather than the general population of Silsden.
I hope this isnt connected to the belated objection to the building of the new changing rooms and facilities. Grants from The Football Foundation, Sport England and others to Silsden should be celebrated.
ps I dont think lottery money was involved.

Alan with regards to the Keighley road ground to the best of my knowledge the sports clubs didnt get a penny from the lottery most of the grant came from various footballing organisations and various cricketing organisations plus monies that they raised themselves .With ref to the ground itself one of the trustees ,Micheal Sutton from Swartha will be able to fill in any missing details of the land

Same sort of thing Bob T. None of these organisations give you money unless they are sure that you have title to the land etc.

The fields were given by the Driver family (of Drivers Mill) to be used by the people of Silsden for sport.
There have always been a trustee from each of the Cricket, Football and Bowling clubs plus two neutral trustees. Further details could be obtained from the secretaries of the various clubs or the trustees themselves. Mick Sutton is the football trustee. Jack Ward for the bowling club and Tim Sugden used to be the cricket trustee although this could have changed now. Neutral ones are David Winstanley and Paul Spencer.

Who has a copy of the trust documents 'loubylou'? It would be fascinating to see them.

I'm not sure - I would say David Winstanley is the person to speak to. My dad was a trustee but he finished - obviously too elderly!!

can of worms i think not. Its a case of something good about to happen for Silsden & some people are worried about a bit of competition.

The facilities to me look top notch & its encouraging to see the hard working people at the clubs involved bringing this project to us.

myth more like moth & you know what happens to them in bright lightsrazz :prazz :prazz :p
