IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. If nobody joined the military how would we have war? We always blame the politicians, but why do we help them by joining the military? Donovan got it right in his song Universal Soldier! |

... and without the military who would man the fire engines when the firemen go on strike, fight the forest fires, carry out search and rescue, burry the foot and mouth diseased animals, clear up after natural disasters, keep the peace between warring factions .... and I'm sure we can all think of a few more scenarios where the call is "they should call the army in" and would you be shot at for the pay we give the sqadie on the ground at the sharp end? The military is not just about wars. The Iraq war was about oil and politicians revenge, perhaps sorting out Mugabie and the poverty he has created in Zimbabwe would have been more appropriate - but then there isn't any oil there! |

I wouldn't be shot at for any price Fred. But neither would I join the army to fight the politicians war! Just ask yourself which sections of society they look for to be squaddies. The American Marines are now trying to recruit from the poorest areas of the States to find the fodder for the Iraq war. Ain't it always been that way? |

Uncle Tom |
Why worry about getting shot at, there's more chance of getting killed on the roads, by all the idiots that either do not know how to drive, or do not care. More Americans were killed on the roads in the USA than in Vietnam during the period of the war. More in Northern Ireland than in the troubles. This is an insult to all the service men who gave their all for the fredom we now enjoy. Stop running them down and support them for doing the best with what they have. |

It's the politicians we're running down "Uncle Tom" not the servicemen! |

Uncle Tom |
It does not sound that way to me reading the comments, Alan and others. Our lads have a good long tradition of being there when it counts and doing the right thing, so please be careful how you put your views. |

I thought that it was free speech they fought for Uncle Tom? So we are not allowed to speak out about wars such as Vietnam in your mind? Or maybe Iraq? Why did the Americans go in to Vietnam, answer - because they were frightnend of communism! Why did they go in to Iraq - answer - oil. Neither was for the good of the countries peoples! |

Uncle Tom |
You have missed the point; it was the service men that went to fight the war, because they were told to. They should not be blamed for the folly of the politicians. That is what happened to the service men of the USA after Vietman. They were totally rejected for doing what they joined up to do, was told to do, and was completely let down for it. Exactly the same as Bomber command was in WW2. |

I think that it's you that doesn't take note Uncle Tom! Read my previous comments. |

Uncle Tom |
Well I cannot see what you are getting at, and I still think you missed the point. |

Alan/Tom step back a bit from the conflict you two have started. you then might br able to see a bigger picture! It will only stop wasr if nobody joined any army, that includes the small local ones such as the criminal gangs ie the start of the Nazi party. It is precisly because of people like them we need an army, for defence, and sometimes the best means of defence is attack. |
![]() |
alan |
Just lively debate Grandad! Agree with the Second World War, but which criminal gang started the Vietnam war? We must consider that sometimes we are the bad guys! |
![]() |
Uncle Tom |
Ok Alan, please do tell us who started the Vietnam War. I know my military history do you? |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) To the original quuestion: I think it would be difficult to attain such an ideal as ending war, poverty and hunger, as so much history is going to be remembered and used against each other. I think maybe it is down to the individual to do his or her bit (if thats what they feel is right) - some people jump on bandwagons and some don't respond to orders... personal choice of what you want to do with your life is a difficult subject to agree on. Ask anyone on the street - Do they want peace? - obvious answer is YES!... Ask them how to go about it... each will give different answers and most will involve playing a blame game. A good topic for sure... anyone know any answers that are common to all our sensibilities? ps - if we managed to end war etc... that would be one hell of a party |

you'll never end any of these....war, poverty or hunger....they've been around for 10000 years, and always will be part of life. Sadly. Whoever comes up with the answer to this one will be a genius, but everybody has a view. This could be the longest running thread ever. |
