IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

I've just had a call from a supposed tech support company as I had supposedly logged a call with them because my pc was downloading "junk" files from the internet. He could have sounded convincing had I not known that what he was telling me was complete horse plop!

I suspect I would have been told to go to a web site and download some software which would have been a key logger or virus or such like.

Just be aware because they would sound convincing to someone who didn't know about these things.

I've just had the same call twice, wanted me to boot up my pc and he would talk me through speeding up my computer. Watch out for numbers 001110 & 001108.

My advice is sign up to ofcom's telephone preference service.

If you're number is ex-directory and/or on telephone preference service when you get a cold call you need to ask them the following:

What is the name of the company you work for (not working on behalf of!)
Where did you get my contact details.
What is your name.
If you did not give them permission and they are not your service provider then ask them why they are phoning an ex-directory number and/or someone signed up to telephone preference service!

this is a good idea, and worth a try... we did this and it worked for a little while, but any calls from outside UK are not covered, and as a large percentage of cold calls come from Bangalore, you still get bothered a lot. We have given up, but at least give it a try!
