Topic : EU meeting - Sat 18th June 11.30am at Silsden Methodist Church |
|
| CW |
EU Referendum meeting 'What is the truth about the EU?" Richard Corbett MEP for Yorkshire & the Humber and co-author of 'The European Union:How does it work?' will be speaking at Silsden Methodist Church on Saturday 18th June at 11.30am. He will be talking and asking questions about how the EU operates including how laws are made, who makes them and how many affect us. Richard has been described by former BBC Europe correspondent, Mark Mardell, as "one of few people who understand how the European Parliament actually works and explain it well" |

Please note Richard Corbett is a on the remain side in the debate www.richardcorbett.org.uk/make-a-difference/ |

Yes, but in this instance he is under strict instructions to speak purely about the apparatus of the EU and not about whether it is a good or bad thing. We will be having a chair who will ensure this is neutral and will have only factual information from Full Fact on display. Thanks |

So why not have two people one from each side in the interest of fairness |

Hi again. Because we are trying just to provide some facts like explaining how Parliament works or how the voting system works rather than is it a good thing or a bad thing. There are two events locally (one in Keighley and one in Skipton) this week which are doing the traditional too and fro debate and we wanted to provide something different. Quite a lot of the time in these debates people make wild claims which the audience can't check. You are very welcome to come along and check that we are being impartial. |

In my opinion it is impossible to have an IMPARTIAL debate about the EU referendum when the only speaker supports one side(remain) of argument AND is/has been a EU employee for the last 20 years. He is so pro Europe it is a mistake to call the meeting impartial. How pro EU?.According to Wikipedia this is his cv prior to becoming an MEP Richard Corbett's activities in the European Students at Oxford led on to him being elected first to the youth board of the European Movement in Britain and then to the international presidency of the youth wing of the European Movement and of the Union of European Federalists, the Young European Federalists (JEF), a post he held from 1979 to 1981, drafting their manifesto which was the first to coin the phrase "democratic deficit" in relation to the European Parliament's then lack of power over European legislation. Corbett was secretary-general of the European Co-ordination Bureau of International Non-Governmental Youth Organisations from 1977 to 1981, representing youth organisations in the Council of Europe's European Youth Foundation and European Youth Centre. He also helped to set up the European Youth Forum and represented Western European youth organisations in negotiations with Eastern European organisations pursuant to the Helsinki Treaty (as well as at the World Festival of Youth in Havana in 1978 along with Charles Clarke and Peter Mandelson). He worked with Altiero Spinelli MEP on the latter's proposal for a draft treaty establishing a European Union, adopted by the European Parliament in 1984. Before being elected to the European Parliament, Corbett worked in the voluntary sector and as a civil servant,[7] later becoming a policy advisor to and then Deputy Secretary General of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament. He worked on drafting the parts of the treaties of Maastricht and Amsterdam that increased the powers of the Parliament, notably helping to draft the "codecision procedure" which now applies for adopting European legislation through successive readings of the Parliament and the Council. Worth listening to...of course you can not beat a good debate..Calling it impartial...your joking. |

this post has been edited 2 time(s) Anybody on Twitter who wants to find out how pro EU Corbett is can find out here https://twitter.com/RCorbettMEP Richard CorbettVerified account @RCorbettMEP Yorkshire & Humber MEP. Deputy Leader of Labour MEPs. Vice-Chair UK @euromove, euromyth-debunker. My app is Doorstep EU. RTs aren't endorsements. #StrongerIn Has anybody else never heard of him before, I cant recall him coming to Silsden before his job was under threat yet it appears he has been one of our MEP's since 1999. Mind you, you can say the same about all our MEP's being invisible which speaks volumes about the EU and democracy. I am not surprised he wants to keep the gravy train going. Its mindboggling what MEP's earn so anybody going to the meeting please read this www.ibtimes.co.uk/eu-elections-what-moneyed-meps-get-salary-expenses-1449492 |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b07gtz2w/daily-politics-14062016 37 mins into the program. I hope the chair is impartial and firm because Richard Corbett MEP definitely has strong views about remaining in the EU. |

As the leave campaign is based on wishful thinking, hope and some outright lies rubbishing it is easy. This is not to mention the nasty xenophobic element. |

quoteAs the leave campaign is based on wishful thinking, hope and some outright lies rubbishing it is easy. This is not to mention the nasty xenophobic element. So when Tom Watson, deputy leader of the Labour Party says today that immigration will have to be controlled in future, he is being xenophobic..? Is he a nasty bloke..? And he is part of the Remain camp...! |

Controlling immigration is easy. Just remove the incentives to migration. |

Won't you join our Common Market?, said the spider to the fly, It really is a winner and the cost is not too high. I know De Gaulle said “Non”, but he hadn't got a clue, We want you in, my friends and I, for we have plans for you. You'll have to pay a little more than we do, just for now, As Herr Kohl said, and I agree, we need a new milch cow, It's just a continental term, believe me, mon ami, Like “Vive la France” or “Mad Anglais” or even "E.E.C". As to the rules, don't worry, friend, there are really but a few. You'll find that we ignore them – but they all apply to you. Give and share between us, that's what it's all about, You do all the giving, and we all share it out. It's very British, is it not, to help a friend in need? You've done it twice in two World Wars, a fact we must concede, So climb aboard the Market Train, don't sit there on the side, Your continental cousins want to take you for a ride! |

Hi Wheelaman123 I am trying to find out what is happening re the suspension of campaigning whether it was just yesterday (Thursday) or will continue for longer. I will also be keeping an eye on what is happening with the two other meetings arranged for tonight (one in Keighley and one in Skipton). I will post an update asap. Thanks |
|
| wheelaman123 |
From my understanding the cessation of E.U. debate is for 3 days starting yesterday. |

R I P , so sad, thoughts are with all her family and friends |

Hi Wheelaman123 Can you let me know where you found the 3 days cessation info. Can't see anything on the Vote Leaver and Stronger In websites. I have heard that the event in Keighley tonight has been cancelled but the one in Skipton is still on. Labour Party site says events suspended (but not until when) and Conservative site doesn't say. |
|
| wheelaman123 |
Yes I heard this from some M.P. who was been interviewed outside the Houses of Parliament and he said that this 3 days would give everyone time to reflect on everything. |
|

Dear All After much consideration and wide consultation, especially of course with Richard Corbett, we have decided to continue with tomorrow's event, as indeed did the 38 Degrees/Ermysted's Grammar school event in Skipton tonight. One of the reasons we decided to proceed was down to the fact that the event is a talk about the mechanisms of the EU and not a heated debate. Richard will also say a few words about Jo Cox and we will have a minutes silence for her. |
|
| wheelaman123 |
Another reporter has said on B.B.C. news that campaigning should resume on Sunday. |
