This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Hi all. In the summer, I'm going back to Zambia (I went last year, and had a brilliant experience) with the Book Bus charity. Book Bus was set up by David Gordon and Tom Maschler in 2008 to increase literacy levels in Zambia by taking a bus full of books and volunteers into schools, and working with children and teachers to create a love of reading. Primary schools in Zambia have large classes (upto 60 at a time) and teachers don't have experience of working with small groups, or combining creative work with literacy, so the addition of volunteers allows children to work in different ways, and explore books creatively.

I'm currently raising a bit of funding to buy children's picture books, and art materials (which simply aren't available there) to take with me when I fly out. These would be used with the children, then donated to either Book Bus or one of the participating schools when I leave. If you'd like to donate a little something, please go to wefund.com/project/book-bus-luanwga-summer-2014/p59825/ (every penny will be used to buy books and art stuff - everything else is already paid for). If you'd like to see pictures of the 2013 adventure, they're at https://www.flickr.com/photos/laisterdyke/sets/72157635038691362/ and there's a blog I wrote last year at adeythom.tumblr.com

Finally, if anyone has a community group or similar that meets in the evenings, and would like me to come and talk about the project (with pictures - many pictures!), you can contact me at adeythom(at)gmail(dot)com - obviously replacing the (at) and (dot) appropriately!

Thanks,

Adrian Thompson
