Hi

When VAT was temporarily reduced to 15%, the Chancellor added 2% duty to fuel to offset the reduction in tax collected from motorists. Now that VAT has been increased to 17.5% again this hidden tax has not been removed - hence recent rises in your fuel costs.

There is a petition on the 10 Downing Street website which you can sign to have this stealth tax removed - see link below.

Unfortunately not. However, I am concerned about the future and what we are going to leave behind. Oil is really to valuable a commodity to burn.

Cars are actually to cheap, that is why there is so many of them clogging the world up. A lot less cars around would be better for everyone.

You question appears to be rhetorical, but just in case it's not. People have to be in different places at the same time, often places where there are not reliable or frequent pulic transport links.

but anyway this thread was about the governments sneaky leaving on of the extra fuel duty now that vat has gone back up.

agreed bobber
i work shifts dont think public transport runs between midnight n 6am no good for me

plus mrs works far side of leeds
possible with public transport but its that crap she nearly lost her job a few years ago due to crap connections/late trains before she got a car

as my dad has said for years very few people work at the mill at the end of the road these days
(probably as it was shut years ago and has since been turned into apartments)

Cheap fuel has created the phenomena of mass commuting. If the cheap fuel policy cannot be sustained then there will have to a lot of re-thinking on employment patterns.

Commuting started as public transport increased. Around some cities the railways were created as commuter links. In retrospect closing many of the rail lines that fed into Leeds and Bradford was not a good idea as some would have made good commuting routes.

My personal opinion is that the current level of personal transportation is unsustainable; one reason for moving to Silsden with good road an rail public transport. (it might not be brilliant but is a lot better than many other places)
