From my expierience the utility companies use a little scam over this. They will under estimate your readings on the day of the price rise. Then when they actually get a reading they will get the amount underestimated at the new increased price.

Everyone should phone a reading in on the day then price rises.

Im on a fixed contract or I might have given an inflated reading so I would get the benefit not them.

Unfortunately, until our European status is sorted out, the energy companies have us in a strangle hold. 20 power stations to close by 2014, development of new stations way behind schedule, all point to additional imports of energy.

Why are the independent watch dogs not having any control of the price hikes? Why are the government allowing the companies to hike prices at will?

£105 pm is not that good for Gas/Elec/Phone/Broadband.

We have three and a half people living in our house (son is away at Uni half the year) with full central heating and regular ADSL Broadband with calls included and our bill for these four "utilities" is a good bit less than £105pm.

very true, I was comparing us with you only in terms of bedrooms and radiators, but I'm like the bloke in the gas advert that goes around in his t-shirt and shorts, turning the thermostat down all the time happy :)

Obviously it remains to be seen how accurate their quote has been but I have just signed up for Utility Warehouse and the combined cost of gas, elec, broadband (with no limits which I had before) and membership fees are less than half of the best deal I got last year on a comparison site! Plus they are paying my early termination fees on the gas and elec! Thanks for the tip, even if it isn't as cheap as they say, it's got to be cheaper than before.

I always go for a fixed price deal. Cost a bit more to start, but invariably the price goes up, for everyone not on a fixed price contract. First time was with British Gas who were so desperate for customers they offered a three year deal. Nice while it lasted, in the final year we were well below the going rate. OK, a bit of a hike when it ended, but we were prepared. Tried another, not for three years unfortunately, but even so it is in our favour again.

I'm on a fixed rate until 2014, with Scottish Power. I received an email from Ecoexpert who suggested contacting my supplier with a view to getting plug in devices to turn off appliances on standby, many suppliers supply these foc. I looked on

Ecoexpert suggests contacting your supplier regarding plug in devices that shut down devices when you press standby. They state that many suppliers will supply limited numbers free of charge.

Interested in this concept, I went on to Scottish Power website, only to find they charge £25 for each device! They can supply a state of the art monitoring system, linked to a. Pc. This is offered from £130 - £250.

They are offering Eco kettles at £45 each??

My kettle bought from Asda (I think) cost me £7, is stainless steel, is in daily use and I've had it for at least 7 years!

If that cannot be classed as profiteering, then I don't know what is!!
