It is the same on Keighley Road, none of the numbers run in any kind of sequential order. It is quite fun watching delivery drivers trying to make sense of it.

From my memory Tom Lewis' was one of the two shops that became Foster & Riley, later Neil Albone turned them into bonapartes. Opposite the Lion were Coopers shoe repairs. Ramsbottoms had a branch there for some time, I believe there were three shops, one of the many attemps to open a cafe failed there also.

Robin you are quite right regarding the location of Tom Lowis(correct spelling) barbers shop.ii can remember as a lad in the fifties there was 3 barbers shops in Silsden as well as Tom Lowis there was John Lythe in Bradley Rd.(John Lythe the man with the scythe)and the one I went to Arthur Wades on Clog Bridge. The former John Lythe shop now under a new namei is featured in John Liddles excellent web site "Silsden a Living History" .Do any old uns remember the Berylmonte cafe next to Tom Lowis,s shop? I had forgot all about until I saw it on a photograph on Johns site .It was opposite the "Milk Bar"Do check Johns site out. Some great photos of Silsden now and then.

I remember a barbers and greengrocers by the fire station opposite the church, now the Memorial Gardens(unless Mallinson has sold it).
Perhaps the missing numbers could have been "back to back" houses?

Lenny, thanks for the spelling, Tom was always known as Lowis, I couldn't remember whether this was correct or just Silsden speak. The two shops next to the firestation were Arthur Bailey painter and decorator and Gibson's greengrocer, (Burr Sugden had their offices above)Gibsons then moved next to the newsagent taking over from the Tailors, Arthur Bailey's became Arthur Wade's when he returned to Silsden, Jeff Walbank took over from him.

Robin. Very interesting reply regarding old shops.Yoo mention Gibsons the green grocers moving next to the newsagents taking over the tailors..Interestingly the tailors was owned by my uncle Willy Dixon and next to his shop was a sweet shop run by my cousin his daughter Jean Dixon. Who I believe later became Jean Haigh.her shop was next to the "Milk Bar" a place I frequented in my youth. Does anyone know when the Milk Bar closed and what it became afterwards?

It was with the barbers between that and the fire station. My mum and dad lived at 88 Kirgate, now Cut Italia before it became The Water Board office. It used to flood the cellar when it rained.

Lenny, I can't remember quite when the Milk Bar closed, or how long it was empty, it did become a Laundrette and dry cleaners, some time in the 60's. The sweet shop you mentioned became the liberal rooms after their club in Shed Side closed. Next door was Moorshouses Jewelers. The site of the Milk Bar is now a Take away Chinese I think.

Looks like on that photo the "Lipton" sign is Nadines shop. The Wine Bar is 46-48 Kirkgate and Hair Design Centre so it doesnt really answer the question. The now demolished shops would be numbered 50+.

Robin. Thanks for your reply you are mentioning shops I had completely forgotten about. Any thoughts on the"Berylmonte" cafe opposite the milk bar? I place I remember going with my Mum and Dad as a young boy in the 1950s .It had an upstairs and downstairs. Peter thanks for posting pictures on the subject. And congratulations on your excellent site .Much appreciated by an exiled "Cobbydaler" living in the Midlands.

Gazza, the Liptons sign is outside what was or would be Saviles Bakers, later Oscar and Celia Wilkin, Edith Savile continued to serve in the shop after her father sold it. Nadines is what was in my childhood a Dry cleaners run by a lady called June, (surname escapes for moment)on the other side was Varley's chiropdodist. Lenny I have no recolection of Berylmonte's cafe, when do you think it would close?

Robin. I would say the "Berylmonte" cafe closed in the early to mid 1950s .Lakeland dry cleaners took its place. Do any old Silsdeners remember the cafe?

Lenny, If you look at the PDF picture you can see that Berylmonte is to the right of the barbers, the dry cleaners I remember was next door left, between Saviles and Tom's. I was only 3y.o. mid fifties so that is why I don't remember the cafe. Tom Lowis's sister is a near neighbour I will ask her, who took over the cafe.

If anyone is doing a family tree and has something like "findmypast" it would be possible to look at the 1911 census which would show if there was a 40 or 42
