This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

They really do need to find a new electrical goods buyer. They have a job lot of freeview boxes at almost £29 which "includes" 3 months free Setanta. Tesco's were selling this product at £8 just to get rid of them as soon as Setanta went bust.Maybe thats where th Co-op got them from

Unfortunately the Co-op just doesn't have the purchasing power of Walmart (oops ASDA!) so they will never compete on price, that's why they can survive in Silsden (and Riddlesden), no real competition.

The Co-Operative is owned by the members of the Co-Operative. So, if the members do not like it then they can complain. The meetings are regularly posted.
While the Co-Operative movement is not as big as Wally's Market et al it actually is quite a vertical organisation. A lot of the fresh food comes from Co-Operative farms and the pre-packaged food from Co-Operative food production plants.
I must admit to noticing those Setanta receivers and wondered what would happen. I suspect that it is not yet down to local management discretion. "computer says keep the price".
We actually find the Co-Operative an excellent local facility and only go elsewhere for a choice. Something that is possible here where we are just one bus ride from all the major supermarket groups plus one very good independent (Booths). In some parts of the country the local choice is one big supermarket that has put all the independents out of business. Nice local monopolys, with prices to match.
Pricewise the likes of ASDA and Tesco have a habit of shouting low prices, but when there one finds the basics one really needs are no cheaper, and sometimes more expensive, than the Co-Operative.
As far as Silsden is concerned it is obvious that the Co-Operative is the oldest rader in town, unless that sign they painted over over the bookies was a mirage!

Now that the Co-op has got proper bags back (which are bio-degradeable) I think it's an excellent store in the town.

Would rather have it than ANY of the big supermarkets.

Hear,hear,Tolpuddle! Couldn't agree more.
And, just in case you're interested, the Coop Society in Silsden goes all the way back to 1873. It was set up by Silsden folk angry at the price of coal asked by local coal merchants. They decided to buy direct from a colliery Two years later, this Coop group moved into groceries and opened their first little shop in a cottage in St John's Street. So the Coop has been part of this community for a long time!

Well said greenlanes, we're lucky to have it.

Think what it'd be like if we had to rely on the big supermarkets in keighley, Skipton, and Ilkley......... wink ;)

As one of the 'owners' of the Co-operative I prefer their true prices rather than the short term loss leading used by other chains to get the punters in.

Big business has been sniping at the Co-Operative for years and no doubt have their lackies to put forward that opinion on sites such as this. That they have failed is recognition that most shoppers are not mugs.

That most Cobbydalers are not mugs is obvious by the numbers now shopping at the Co-Operative and the staff continually shelf filling.

To have surviced for over 170 years means they are doing something right!!!!

Yep, they've found a niche with no competition.

You'll notice the co-op in Keighley is no more....

On the subject of the COOP.
In the 1950s when i lived in silsden
the town had many coop shops one on Keighley Rd.
near the Grouse. one bottom of Howden Rd. South
view Terrace.bridge st. near where the present
one is now. Dradishaw rd. Plus coop Butchers.
Greengrocers. Coal merchants on Keighley rd
At the end of Eiiiott St. also drapery. shoes
and a cobblers.where the Bookmakers.is now.
Can anyone think of anymore? I can still remember my mothers check number.1676. you used that to accrue your " Divi". We didnt know what
a supermarket was in those days.

My main problem with the co-op is how they stack up items on the way into the store, and at the ends of the aisles, plus anywhere there might happen to be a space. I am in a wheelchair and have to manouvre these obstacles, sometimes with quite close calls. When stacking sheves the assistants will leace big trolleys in the aisles, plus boxes, so that it is impossible to get through. I know if I mention it to anyone they will say "what is it your'e wanting". I just like to look along each aisle because sometimes it jogs my memory of what I need. When I get to the far end and need something from the frozen section it's even worse because of the booze stacked up there. one day I had to ask a member of the public to get me some chips, and the poor woman was calling out brands and prices for me. The good point is that when I get to the checkout the assistants are always helpful and pack goods into my carry bag on the back of my chair. If the co-op wasn't there I'd miss it, but they do need to tighten up on certain things like fresh produce too.

I used to shop at co-op almost every day but recently I have been very disappointed with the quality of some of the stuff, the chicken does not seem as good and the southern fried mini fillets ended up in the bin they were so tough they were inedible. Some of the meal deal main courses are awful too.
