IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : City Connect - Canal Path Improvements |

![]() Building on the canal towpath upgrades made as part of the CityConnect1 project, this scheme will involve the construction of an off- highway cycle route, with high quality surfacing, covering around 2.7km from Lodge Hill Bridge at Riddlesden Golf Club (Bridge 194) to Silsden Road Bridge (Bridge 191A). The scheme will enable the towpath to be used safely and comfortably by cyclists and pedestrians all year round. The upgraded towpath will provide a number of communities and towns within the Bradford District access to a continuous segregated cycleway from Skipton to through to Leeds City Centre, and the key employment and retail hubs surrounding them. The material used to improve the towpath has been chosen according to the Canal and River Trust Towpath Design Standards 2013. It will be a natural compacted limestone surface. This has been used on some sections of the CityConnect 1 scheme and is well suited to a semi-rural environment such as this. For full details of the works, which all being well are scheduled to begin in January 2017. cyclecityconnect.co.uk/projects/leeds-to-skipton-canal-improvements/ |

\good to see the towpath upgrade but will be interested on the anti cycling comments Remember if it wasn`t for cyclists the towpath would not be upgraded |

I walk on the canal at Bingley/Crossflatts often and I have to say since it's been opened up to cyclists that all the ones I've encountered have been considerate and sensible. |

The width of the path on by Crossflatts and Bingley allows plenty of room for all users and there are signs which say pedestrians have priority. If cyclists could be polite enough to sound their bell when approaching pedestrians from behind, particularly on the more narrow stretches in our area it would be appreciated. The canal towpaths are used by many, recreational walkers, dog walkers, runners, photographers and cyclists so tolerance towards all users is the best way. It will be a huge improvement as that area becomes a virtual no go area for those on foot when it is wet with the decayed path leaving the choice of a slide towards the water or the thorn bushes. Hopefully the Silsden to Kildwick stretch won't be too long before it gets a good level surface too! |

Section between Bradley and Skipton now has a decent width hard surfaced path, it used to be the same mess as either side of Silsden. Does anyone have any news on the proposed upgrade of our local towpath? |

this post has been edited 3 time(s) ive heard nothing but it makes sense to do the towpath from where it stopped at bradley to silsden stone bridge, then its then a good path from leeds to skipton when finished ,i dont know why they av gone onto skipton and worked back towards silsden instead of starting again at the bottom of hainsworth road, which this proposed work is going to get done, where the cycle route 69 goes off the towpath onto hainsworth road back up to silsden. im sure the cyclists walkers, fishermen can all get on together as the towpath is a very safe place to cycle away from traffic, and perfect for large folk like me who cant cycle up (big) hills.
