This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Not wishing to hide behind odd login names, I'm Richard Barton, secretary of Silsden Playing Fields Bowling Club. In December I found that Bradford's budget plan for 2015/16 included transfer of maintenance of all 55 greens / clubs in the Bradford met area to 'the Community'. Discovery of this required trawling through the 86 page budget proposal doc on Bradford's website. The proposal saved £50k / year. Most greens are in parks, there is no secure storage for £4k mowers, there is no expertise in clubs to cut greens (I can assure you it is not like cutting your lawn), the age profile of bowlers (we tend to be knocking on a bit) suggests we shouldn't be cutting greens. Councillor Thornton stated in the T&A around 16th Jan that he
was in full consultation with all clubs. This was er...inaccurate, was challenged and amazingly a consultation meeting was called. The clubs are happy to pay on a levy per player basis as we realise we have played on the cheap for a while. However, the benefit to the NHS and Bradford Met of engaging the over 65's in exercise, companionship, competition etc falls within their aim of 'promoting better health, better lives active communities'. I could go on. Thanks to Councillors Atkinson and Naylor and MP Kris Hopkins for their support. I've had no feedback from Councillor Mallinson. If you want full details, or fancy a game (assuming we still have a green) send me an email richbarton1@blueyonder.co.uk.

Posted on behalf of Joan

I agree with all Richard Barton says re green maintenance What else is there for the elderly in Silsden? Gentle exercise,do as much or as little as you want, join a team,be competitive ,have a natter over a cup of tea,all at a price pensioners can afford.Have noticed the new seats round green why if green not used,or is this another devious way of council getting rid to use for other purposes e.g. library not comfy there now for elderly to sit and browse.

It would be interesting to know which political persuasion the majority of councillors are in areas where the bowling greens are.I can not see many being in inner city areas.

I'm pleased to report that Councillor Mallinson has confirmed today that he is in full support of our efforts.
