This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Not much newswise regarding the local elections so perhaps we could post questions then the candidates could e-mail* Peter(if he is not too busy).
*for security reasons

I will start.
What are the candidates views on the proposed ring road/development on the outskirts of Silsden?

I can't remember seeing or receiving any leaflets, but the local election candidates who are vying for our vote on 6 May 2010 are:

I know who WON'T be getting my vote. The ones who have year, after year, after year, allowed the footpath on Hillcrest Avenue to get into the state it is in. When just about everyone in Silsden is united in their opinon that , this is a DANGER to the elderly who have to use it to get to the CO-OP .There is an exception to every rule. This footpath is the exception.

Gazzer raises a very important question we should be asking our local prospective councilors. This website came into existence to coordinate the documents of the UDP and successfully allowed the residents of Silsden to stop the excessive housing increase proposed for Silsden. THE EXISTING UNITARY DEVELOPMENT PLAN (UDP) COMES TO AN END IN 2014 In 2014 we will probably again be defending Silsden against the might of developers.

PLEASE READ
www.silsden.net/udp/silsdenUDP_RDDP_Inspectors_Report.htm

For those of you that think a bypass is the answer to our traffic problems THINK AGAIN. The last UDP proposal would have allowed the size of Silsden to increase by a third (at least 1500 new houses) and the proposed bypass was not going to happen, rather it would have been an access road to Ilkley and access road to Silsden.... it would have been too expensive to cross the canal. So how could the "bypass" be of any benefit to Silsden when it would just provide access to 1500 houses and most of the new residents would have been commuters. Would they have spent money in Silsden? Would they work in Silsden? Would they pay lots of council tax to Bradford?

When was the last time you went through Bingley, when was the last time you actual stoped there, do you know if there are any new shops there?

We don't need a bypass but we do need a ban on HGV vehicles through Silsden.

I'm not sure why a bypass has to be linked to a large number of extra houses. Addingham got a bypass, and there was no increase in houses followed that.
It would be great to get the heavy traffic out of Silsden, can the local politicians not get a better deal for us?
Although, on reflection, there isn't going to be any money to do anything!

Next time you go to Ilkley and use the Addingham bypass look to the left and you will see lots of new houses. sad :(

PS You may have to use google satelite view and street map because of the high embankment on the bypass... but there are lots of houses just over the embankment.

there is no need for a bypass. there is no situation in this town that remotely justifies the relevance of a bypass. any party that proposes such pointless plans will be vehemently opposed.

not 1500 new houses, can't be.
and some of those were there before the bypass, I seem to remember from 25 years ago.
Anyway, all academic, it's unlikely there will be significant changes to anything in next 10/15 years until our massive debts are paid off.

I was at a meeting recently where one of the candidates said he had been speaking with developers just that week and this candidate seemed quite confident the development would go ahead in the not too distant future.

Has anybody got any other questions for the candidates because i am sure they will read this?

Carliol, you didn't read my previous post correctly. The 1500 houses were the number the UDP proposed to build on the Banklands Area of Silsden in 2004. The houses would have been bordered by a bypass, which in practice would not actually been a bypass because it would not have crossed the canal. The developers were only interested in making money and the canal bridge which they had to pay for would have been very expensive.

PLEASE READ (the short version)
www.silsden.net/udp/silsdenUDP_RDDP_Inspectors_Report.htm

...and for more information the complete document www.bradford.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/153FC8D7-1B39-4EFC-897F-2EC9B91EE577/0/KeighleyMaster1.pdf

The UDP will be reviewed in 2014 expect the proposal to build on Banklands to be on the agenda. Choose your local councilor wisely!

the last time i went through bingley was 30 minutes ago
there are plenty of new shops there
the shopping center has been completely revamped

i remember bingley before the bypass
theres no way it was better then

the people driving through silsden as a short cut dont stop to shop they complain that shoppers slow them down on there rat run

all the lack of a bypass does is make it more dangerous for silsdenites walking and shopping round the center

bingley is alot nicer now you can actually get across the main road no problem
and theres more parking at the side of the road for shoppers too

Peter, many thanks for the info. I've lived in a few places that have been "bypassed", and they have all turned out better places to live, and actually more prosperous after a year or two.
Locals who opposed it were pleasantly surprised how things turned out when the heavy traffic was diverted and the pollution reduced.
But I realise it can be complicated by local politicians with vested interests.
You are right that if it is looming again in 4 years time, people in Silsden should be involved soon, and have their say.

NOTE: the area of ground up from Banklands Lane was reserved for a junior school but was removed from the adopted UDP plan in 2005 and re-designated to be safeguarded land. It is now fenced off although it was used for recreational purposes for over 20 years (used to have rugby posts on it).

I wonder what it will become in 2014? sad :(

To remind you this is the land I am talking about maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=silsden&ie=UTF8&ll=53.913291,-1.928524&spn=0.002875,0.003691&t=h&z=18

Do any of you know who these people are and what their policies are for Silsden? I haven't received anything through the door but we are expected to vote for one of them next Thursday. Perhaps there should be a box "none of the above" if they can't be bothered to let us know what they stand for. sad :(

Peter...you are on to something here. Maybe they are just piggybacking on the national vote, but it's not the same thing, we need local issues addressed as well. Complacency on the part of the candidates?

From Keighleynews.co.uk: "The views of the candidates standing in both the general and district council elections are published in this week's Keighley News. We asked each of them to submit their own details and comments."

Couldn't seem to find it published on the website though so looks like you'll have to buy a paper to read the article.

Well, I bought the KN and looked..... but there was no information about what any of our prospective local councillors are standing for. None of the above is looking very good at the moment for the local election sad :(

this post has been edited 1 time(s)

Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
Janitors padlock the gates
For security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show

And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve anymore
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
The martians could land in the carpark and no one would care
Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same video every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
Just survive constant action replay

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While angry from manchester writes to complain about
All the repeats on t.v
And computer terminals report some gains
On the values of copper and tin
While american businessmen snap up van goghs
For the price of a hospital wing

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
