All the discussion about the accident which happened at the pedestrian crossing earlier in the week has made me think what an important subject this is for community action - both from within Silsden and from "frequent flyers" and Silsden's neighbours using the road every day.As many have said on the earlier Accident thread, the whole junction is a nightmare for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Otley have excellent beacons with a lit-up 'halo' round the orange globes at their crossings. These are easily visible and grab drivers attention at all times. I'm sure our traffic is as heavy as theirs. Couldn't we have some of those? Surely they aren't £40,000 each? Cllr Naylor mentioned that figure at a recent meeting but that must be for the traffic light controlled ones? Better lighting would not solve the junction layout problem but they'd make all 3 crossings much safer than they are now.
One day I might move to Silsden from Steeton and not just so I can say things at meetings! It's a great place. But I would think very seriously about living in any property, however lovely which meant I had to turn right out of Howden Rd on a daily basis. Aaaagh.
As a user of the Health Centre, I always use Elliot St as if it is a one way street. Whoever suggested that becoming official is onto something. The whole junction really puts a dark mark against that part of town. There must be something we can all do about it. Hope a way forward is can be devised soon and glad that the matter was discussed as an urgent piece of business by the Town Council. |

Forgive me if I have gawn of thread but: Yesterday evening, I used the crossing by the Town Hall, waited for car travelling towards keighley to stop, saw a small red car level with Holgate's and thought it best to wait, the elderly man driving simply continued. I even waved at him as he passed, on lookers and the other driver were amaized. It's not just the crossing by Clog Bridge, it's a general I don't mind and you don't matter attitude. |

One of the things that was mentioned last night was collating information about Accidents, near misses and reports of "bad Driving" at the junctions and the zebra crossing. I know myself that I have been involved in several near misses where cars haven't spotted me (and beleive me I am easy to spot on foot) both whilst on foot and have several incidents with other motorists poor driving whilst driving my car.
However, like myself I am sure that most people would just have a couple of wearwords to oneself and then forget the incident. This of course means that the near missed and poor driving are not being reflected as police issues statistically.Perhaps if we encouraged reporting of these incidents, inlcuing details of the vehicles it would show a trend of incidents on this location and help bump us up the priority list for Brad Met. And if we report them then the Plice would be obliged to contact the drivers with regards to their behaviour. |

I think this is an excellent suggestion Hermione. Let's try and take it forward. First thing is, this board reaches only a limited number of people. Any ideas about how to reach more with your idea? People will respond I am sure. Then how to record their responses. It probably needs to be planned. fingers crossed. |

The responses would be collated by contact with the police and could be accessed via them.
I am unsure about how to proceed with "advertising" reporting incidents. Perhaps people could give a few suggstions? |

What about contacting the Keighley News, or is that a step in the wrong direction? |

The last time I saw a car fail to stop at the crossing was a few weeks ago. There was a lady waiting and a police car either totally ignored or didn`t see her and carried on driving.He/she had plenty of time to stop, the lady and I both commented on the fact it was a police car. |

From the council meeting on Thursday, I gathered that the issue of the Howden road junction with Kirkgate is complicated. 1. There is the issue of money - what is available 2. planned/proposed future developments in Silsden with road access 3. future development proposals might release funds for remedial works for the junction 4. changes to this junction would affect other traffic features like for example, the other crossings along Kirkgate, the bridge over the canal and tail backs to the roundabout 5. suggestions so far include traffic lights, mini roundabout(s), 20mph limit, a bypass, use of paint and signage, a one-way system. all of these have pros and cons 6. How pressure could be brought to bear on decision makers and purse holders.
I want to be absolutely certain that any changes substantially reduced the risk of injury to people in Silsden and that anything done should reduce that risk rather than move it around, or even increase it. I would want somebody who knows about this to do a risk assessment of the current situation and any proposed changes. With regard to alerting Silsdeners and gathering evidence of near-accidents, Golden Oldie mentioned Keighley News but was unsure about whether this was appropriate. Maybe it would take a group of interested people who could take all these considerations on and take joint decisions and action. I remember a couple of years ago being stopped in Saltaire and asked for my signature on a petition for a 20mph limit there. That was presumably an initiative taken by Saltaire people. Any ideas?

I actually saw only yesterday (friday) a chap nearly getting knocked over whilst he crossed the one by elliot street.... i had stopped my car to let him walk but this other driver had the 'rush hour' face-on and totally ignored it was a crossing and i know he saw the man crossing..... action will only get taken, as per usual, when some-one gets kaputted .... sad but true. |
