Not a council for shirking at tackling the areas majo problems ar they?.I read this in the T&A

"Ilkley-based West Yorkshire Animals in Need has persuaded Bradford Council to ban goldfish and any live animals being offered as prizes in events on Council land.
The ban gained the unanimous support of councillors at Bradford Council's Environment and Waste Management Improvement Committee."

Whatever next?

Why is it rubbish Alan? I personally think giving goldfish as fairground prizes to children should have been banned around the same time as bear baiting.

Obviously there is more money to be made from toffs paying to kill innocent birds than from kids 'hooking a duck' to win a goldfish at the gala.

PC gone mad?! Maybe, or maybe it is a rational sensible decision. The only live animal I can think of being given as a prize is a goldfish. From sad experience in my youth I know that they don't often last long, even when put in a proper tank straight away and looked after. So are they not so well looked after by the people offering them as prizes? Why do they sometimes not live 24 or 48 hours beyond being won?

In a way I'm saddened by this decision because I guess some fish must live for donkeys years and prompt an interest in fish owning beyond goldfish etc.

In another way I think why is it acceptable for an animal to suffer just because it's a little one like a goldfish. If it was a cuddly kitten we'd all be up in arms.

When we were kids we won a goldfish at a fair. As far as I remember it lasted a number of years.

As a goldfish is a member of the carp family some must have been chucked in the canal and certainly grown judging by the size of the big fella leaping out the other day. I though it was fly catching but evidently it is part of the mating game for carp!!

My fairground goldfish lasted years after being upgraded from a bowl into a proper coldwater tank with filtration. It got me interested enough to move up to a larger tropical aquarium. There were much more interesting things happening in the tank than on tv most of the time.
