IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : name and shame { christmas lights } |
|
do-gooders |
Information on silsden.net states that the reason why silsden has a dismal set of christmas lights ,is that, the power supply is not being replaced on new lamp posts and that bradford met are digging their heels in and not being very helpful.info stated on net is new regulations blah blah blah they cant or wont.? Surely this is not actceptable!!!! To the men and women of silsden who help to put up the lights, keep on going your doing a great job,but we need bradford met to tow the line..... We need names of the people who are responsible at brad met and then name and shame them anyway we can until we resolve this mater.. Silsden town council should pay to place a story of our plight in the telegraph paper until they are willing to stand up to there responsibilility...... Come on silsden lets pull our finger out, brad met will not do anything unless we force them..... LETS FORCE THEM..... |

thanks for the up date skippy....its ok eveybody saying we need to make bradford get there finger out ..but we still need more help putting all the lights up...also its the same people that put them up every year...and yes we do get some compliments on how the lights look...but we still get people wingeing about them...as for putting lights on the christmas tree..if im right in saying we cant because of the electric supply to the tree and youth messing with the lights and getting electricuted..(oohhh dear cant have that)... |

Why are we always ignored and not cared about, even crosshills appear to get what they ask for. Go for it Skippy! |
![]() |
pumbajunior |
cross hills is north yorkshire im guessing that bradford dont want to give power points as its bradford council that pay the supply for street lights not saying its right or wrong just saying thats probably the reason why |

To answer a few of the points raised. Bradford Council does not pay for the Electricity used by the lights in Silsden, we estimate the amount used, send then the figure and they send us a bill. Yes we do need a lot more helpers this year none of us are getting any younger and to add to our problems I have a dislodged disc in my back. We don’t force anybody to do anything they are not happy with, for every one that goes up a ladder we need two on the ground helping, holding the ladder and sorting the bulbs and wires out. Alan you appear to have involved Radio Leeds in this year’s event! I trust you will out on the day to deal with them; we will be too busy working. Because this year we have only been advised that we can use the power out of the lamp posts at a very late date, we have not been able to do all the preparation work which usually takes place throughout the year, so we may not be as well organised as we have been in the past, but rest assured we will do our best. I repeat anybody who cares about the Town, should come along on Saturday morning, (and Sunday if we don’t get finished on Saturday) we will be in Kirkgate around the top end, and the Town Hall from 08.30 until it gets dark, you don’t have to commit yourself to working all day if you can only manage a couple of hours it will help. Only the ones, who have bothered to get out and help, should be saying anything derogatory about the display.Complements are welcome from anybody! |

ho ho ho, just been through ilkley this morning as they were putting thier xmas lights up. Big cherry picker and a load of council men, not one volunteer in sight as far as i could see. am i wrong? |
![]() |
alan |
Not quite correct about Radio Leeds grandad, they phoned me and asked me about various things including the lights, and whether there would be a full display this year! I asked if they could provide someone to open the Christmas Market. Which they said they could. All details were passed on to skippy and he is happy to speak to them. |

Sometimes i get the feeling that we have been abandoned by brad met,how do these towns qualify for brad met assistance. surely silsden is large enough for brad met to consider us,their must be a info line/dept who can advice....... |

Dont want to cause a stink but why are you bothering to put up Christmas lights? I think they are a waste of time and money. We could spend the money on something important like shelter for the homeless, food for the hungry or protection for abused children. |

Alan well own ever dropped us in with Radio Leeds had better be there! I have been phoned by them saying they are coming to do a piece for their show and want to speak to somebody on the day. I will be too busy to waste time talking, (I know it is not a problem I usually suffer from, before anybody else says it.) |

what a stupid statement cobbydale man...and yes all those things are important..but why not make you town look nice through christmas..there are lots of familys and children that really enjoy the lights...as for the money, bradmet give the council a very very small amount of money towards the lights... |

I just ignore him BMW, don't rise to the bait. Silsden lights are absolutely fantastic value for money because people like grandad and yourself have put the effort in over the years! |

As I mentioned earlier in the thread I will come along unless I'm already booked up for something else, I don't think I am. As an aside I wonder if this problem is something we can solve with pester power? If enough residents write to the right person at bradford council perhaps we can make a difference. Or can you tell us who EXACTLY is saying "the regulations" prevent them from putting power points on the lights? Maybe a freedom of information request for the right thing will reveal what the regulations are or that there are in fact no regulations at all and it's a whitewash and we're being fobbed off. |

Well said Jonno. |

Well Jonno I've taken your advice. I've gone onto bradford.gov.uk and filled in an online request under the freedom of information act, to find out what exactly this regulation is, and who exactly is responsible for this. Hopefully we'll get a speedy response although I'm not holding my breath. |

Hopefully we'll get a speedy response although I'm not holding my breath. Well done, Wilma, you must have just pipped me to the post... Dear Sir or Madam, I would like to make an FOI request for copies of documentation relating to Christmas Festive Lights in Silsden. Specifically, I have been informed that during a program of replacing/upgrading lamp-posts in Silsden the new/refurbished lamp-posts no longer have a connection from which Christmas Lights can draw power. I am told that Silsden Town Council has asked for connections to be added/replaced but they have been told it is now against "regulations" for this to be done. I would like copies of all correspondence, minutes, memos and so forth regarding this matter, including details of which "regulations" prevent this facility from being provided. I would prefer to receive these documents electronically (i.e. scanned copies) but photocopies will be fine if electronic copies are difficult. If so please contact me by email for my postal address. Yours faithfully, Jonno just submitted 1 minute ago thru the www.whatdotheyknow.com/ website...easy they have 20 days to respond. |

today weve had a very productive meeting with alun preece from festive lights at bfd council, he has checked all the lamposts that are in use, he is going to find out the best way forward to make our lights even better next year, we have pointed out a couple more lamposts that need new fittings so we can bring these back in to use, i am very pleased with the outcome and so was grandad, we shall keep you informed of any further developments ![]() |

well done skippy and everyone else who's worked to get the lights up to the standard they are, we all appreciate your efforts. |
