IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Would love a root of horseradish to plant if anyone has one please, been to 3 garden centers this afternoon and none have any. [email protected] |

I bought one last year from Clumber Park, run by the National Trust. Never seen one before, or since. It was in a small pot, which I transplanted into a tomato bucket. It's not produced leaf yet this year, but it did really well last year. Tesco at Ilkley do or did sell horse radish root. I don't know if they would be viable or not? They would need to be fairly fresh. |

Thanks Gamekeeper, I had one a few years ago and it began to take over, a bit like mint, so I killed it off. Good idea keeping it in a bucket to restrain the roots, should start coming up any time now. Spanish Omelette, you just stick to breaking eggs...... |

Old Bridge Nursery, Ilkley had some last year. |
|
| Dodzi |
Its good news that it should come back- I'd put one in a bucket last year and there is no sign so far.... quick question - how do you get some of it and leave the rest to grow? |

Old Bridge, if they haven't got it there, they might have it at the nursery and will bring it in to Ilkley for you. |

Dodzi, when the leaves die back in winter the root should be lifted and separated, some harvested to eat the other replanted. During spring the shoots come back and the process starts all over again. Any left in the ground and not harvested will become woody and inedible. Old Bridge nurseries did not have any last weekend. |

| Dodzi |
So I leave it this year and remember to harvest next? |

Ideally Dodzi, dig it up, harvest what you need, it keeps pretty well and can be frozen when in a paste or just grated, plant 1 root for this year then check silsden.net in case anyone is looking for a root going spare...... |
