To mark 200 years since the opening of the Leeds Liverpool canal, the historic boat 'Kennet', is embarking on a 9 day journey along the full length of the Canal. 'Kennet', a Leeds Liverpool canal short boat, will arrive in Silsden (with its accompanying flotilla) on the evening of Sunday 16 October at the end of day 2 of its commemorative journey. A special welcome event will take place at the old wharf near the main canal bridge in Silsden between 5.45pm and 7pm on the evening of Sunday 16 October, when Silsden Town Band will play and our Mayor will be there to receive our special visitor. Everyone is invited to come along to join in the welcome. |

Just being pedantic, but I believe the Skipton to Bingley section of the canal opened in 1773. |

Silsden welcomes the Kennet today - 5.45pm to 7pm. Access to the old wharf, where Kennet will arrive, is via the Silsden Mower Services arch opposite the end of Elliott Street. This is private land so thank you to the landowner for allowing access today. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) In October 1816, the inaugural boat passage through the Leeds and Liverpool Canal took place. Flotillas “decorated with flags and streamers” and accompanied by “hearty cheering of immense assemblage of spectators” welcomed the crew as navigated the 127-miles of waterways. Now, this iconic journey is being recreated by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Society, on board the historic short boat, Kennet. Due to a problem with a swing bridge, Kennet was late arriving in Silsden so thank you to everyone for waiting. Thank you to Silsden Town Mayor Peter Robinson for his words of welcome when Kennet arrived; thank you to Silsden Town Band for playing on to keep us entertained and to ensure Kennet had a suitable fanfare when arriving; and thank you to everyone who helped in any way with the arrangements. |
