Silsden Methodist Church (built 1871)closes its doors today for the last time, before demolition. Soon that beautiful weeping willow at the front will be brought down by the axeman. Its farewell too to 150 years of local history and community life in this building and goodbye to the town's last theatrical stage. Out with the old, in with the new.

Old news, tired slant.
The tree, as nice as it is, is only 30 to 40 years old, apparently. It will be felled, yes, but about 70 trees will be planted in and around Silsden to 'replace' it. The new Church will also be built on the site of the original one. What's your problem? |

I will miss that old tree.
None of the new trees planted will reach the size of the old one for years.
As for the new church, will it still be Methodist or will it belong to a new religious order?

Old News? Tired slant? A cynical bit of over-reaction surely! Just thought it would be a bit remiss for Silsden's community web-site to let today pass, without a mention of the closing of a village chapter. Great to hear about the new trees that will be planted - but let's acknowledge the pleasure that the weeping willow has given us for many years, and particularly this summer when it has been lovelier and healthier than ever. Perhaps some symbolism here. Good luck and success to local Methodists in the brand new era.

The Church that is there now isn't the original so it isn't 150 year old. The original was nearer the road. They knocked it down to put it where it is now. They are knocking it down to put it back where it was. |

Perhaps they should put wheels on so they can roll it backwards and forwards every few years |

You're right, Ange, that the original Methodist church was built nearer the road - but the present church was formerly the Sunday School building, developed behind the church around the same time. Records show that there were once almost 400 Sunday School scholars attending there! |

They are knocking it down to put it back where it was. The Methodist Church before 1900 must have been quite a building as you can see from this picture

The foundation stones, for the soon to be demolished building, are shown below:

I think the Fletchers might have had something to do with the building |
