I see that tesco are hoping to open a superstore in silsden, they are looking at habistat and weavestyle. I think habistat is a non starter but might be possible at weavestyle. Not sure whether it is good or bad news,I bet co-op won't be happy but the traffic into and out of silsden will increase as it will not be just silsden people who would use a tesco

If a Tesco superstore got in we would never be able to get out of Silsden with all the extra traffic which would be created sad :( and all the local high street shops would soon go out of business. sad :(sad :(angryangry How could they compete?

Something like a Lidles or Aldi would be more in keeping with the area and give the Co-Op a run for its money. The Co-Op has never been the same since those from 'the dark side' took it over.

Fantastic idea! As a young family with no transport we have no choice to but shop at the co-op as after payin for transport to and from keighley it amounts to the same!! Fantastic idea, I'm all for it!! Also think of the jobs!! Let's hope they get moving fast and get it built! happy :) x

People seem to want another supermarket but not the customers and their new houses to make it viable.

If I can see the contradiction I am sure the supermarket chains surveyors can as well.

On balance, a new supermarket makes sense....locals get jobs and some will be part time to suit mothers, the Co-op get a reality check at last,we may get a roundabout at Belton Road to save the daily dice with death trying to get out in front of the speeding traffic both ways, and more people will visit Silsden.
The traffic problem is all at one end of the town, and surely can be managed somehow?
All sounds good to me happy :)

As a bonus, Tesco might buy the petrol station and bring us some cheaper petrol. Now that would be joined up thinking happy :)

If we get a supermarket planners are going to laugh us out of the place when we put our objections forward for no new houses. You can't say one minute no houses and the next a new supermarket. The arguments don't add up.. Silsden need to decide as a whole what we want and keep with the program.

All the objections for houses are the same for not wanting a supermarket.

This phrase from The Keighley NEws is also laughable "

"They believe a new supermarket would bring desperately-needed jobs to Silsden while cutting town-centre congestion.

They claim it could also keep money in the town without having an adverse effect on existing small traders on the main street.
"

The only way effect that cutting down on town centre traffic will have is taking away custom from all the small traders in Silsden.

I think we need to see through the propaganda that this article is and protest.

A town centre has a small supermarket. You want open another supermarket.
Where do you build your supermarket?

a: next to the existing supermarket
b: on the edge of town.

See next reply for answer.

a: next to the existing supermarket so that you can take all the business. On the edge you only get a share.

Look at Keighley, Skipton, even Ilkley. All the supermarkets are within very short walking distances.

This is a very basic economics question.

Now who thinks Lidl, Tesco et al are going to build on the edge of Silsden?

if i go to skipton to tescos or morrinson i nearly always have a walk round the town and do spend money in the shops the same happens in keighley or any other supermarket i visit that is in walking distance to the town so silsden would be no different in short people would pull in shop then if our town looks inviting they would leave there car at say tescos walk up the canel bridge and have a look round maybe even spend a bit of cash in our local shops as for tescos and houses a by pass right through the golf course would solve any traffic problems lol hahaharazz :p

not sure anyone would bother to walk into silsden from the weavestyle site, it is a bit of a trek and to be honest there isn't much in silsden, everything that can be bought in our local shops can be bought in tesco. It is a bit different walking into skipton, there are lots of shops, a market and a castle same with Ilkley lots of shops, and a nice riverside walk through the park lots of good places to eat and drinkI think a large supermarket whilst providing some jobs will kill silsden shops off.

Tesco's will buy the land, build a store, expand the store, increase the opening hours, expand again, increase the traffic no end, all which will ruin the little town.
We DON'T need it!! We have 4 supermarkets in keighley and the COOP in town. Our roads can't cope as it is, look at Asda in Shipley & Morrisons in Guiseley to see how they RUIN towns!! Be Warned!!!

I hate supermarkets. None of the profits are spent in local business and that is adding to this countries financial problems.
Yes, they might throw a few ££ towards the local school and bring jobs into the area, but those jobs are mostly low paid jobs and don't benefit anybody.
We have a coop, butchers, pharmacy already in the village.
And we have at least 7 milk sucking supermarkets within 7 miles of silsden.
Name me one local person that is financially better off from any of these stores being here?

Tesco is far too dominant now, like a cancar spreading througout the land. Would you want to be one of their 'squeezed'suppliers?
If people want all these souless supermarkets they should move to a location near a retail park.
Few jobs will be provided, many friendly small retilers wil close down.People who lived here for years and dont want to end in in a conjested concrete jungle. Tesco will not source locally.

Local shops open 9 til 5

Most working people are at work between 9 and 5

Supermarkets are open 7 - 10, or more.

Even Karl Marx observed this fact, that most shops were only open when most people were working!!

OK, a few local shops are open all hours, but not many, and they are convenience stores rather than weekly shop stores.

The Co-Operative movement started by providing shops for working people open at times when they could shop.

The Co-Operative in Silsden continues this great working class tradition.

Of course, Tories hate the Co-Operative as it means all their mates running the supermarkets do not have a monopoly to rip us off.

Plenty of Tory sniping at the Co-Operative here at times. Granted, they are not perfect. Then neither are any of the rest.

It's interesting how the Co-op pays its top people, rather than have competitive prices:-
CEO Peter Marks was paid a basic salary of £900,000 in 2010, with a performance-related bonus of £449,000. The basic salaries of the thirteen executives adds up to £4,071,000, with their bonuses adding up to £2,121,000.
It doesn't sound like it's anything like the original Co-op concept....I think Tories would like this business happy :)

Tesco for Silsden?
Jobs and more people spending money in Silsden, but will that happen?

I have made a map and marked all the businesses in Silsden which, I think, will be adversely affected by a Tesco super store, some more than others, but if Tesco’s comes to Silsden it will change what we can buy in Silsden from independent shops.

Butchers, how many butchers do you know on Cavendish Street, Keighley?
Newsagents, a lot of their business is passing trade.
Florist
Pubs
Café
Bakers
Hardware
Pet food
Petrol?

The resulting empty shops will become charity shops and more hairdressers!

Tesco would provide a large car park, but will shoppers bother to walk to Silsden, and walk they must because there is no parking in Silsden. What would be the attraction to visit Silsden anyway?

I guess if they built on the Habasit Rossi site we could occasionally get fresh fish swimming down the aisles when it flooded. If they were to build on the other side of the road we could have traffic lights biased in favour of the supermarket (as the Booths lights are in Ilkley).

I’m not saying we should not have another (small) supermarket, but it should not be a superstore.

Be careful what you wish for!

Latest in the papers suggests that the days of more, and ever more supermarkets are over. Evidently we are buying more and more on line. High streets would then consist of the usual culprits, plus 'kiosks' where we could collect what we have ordered on line.

By the way isn't Tescos just the latest local supermarket rumour. If I remember it was ASDA and maybe others at Steeton, then Lidl where Tescos is expected.

Tescos will probably decide against Silsden and build it at Bowling, next to the new waste processing plant.

So, if I use my car (which I am cutting down the use of) to go to Asda in keighley or Tesco/morrisons in Skipton, I use their car park and walk around that town. People will do that here. Maybe our shops will start to reflect on that type of trade; be it hairdressers, chipshops, second hand or craft shops too. If their car park is big enough, it should attract the footfall. I think we need the potential car park space off Silsden and the council will not pay for it.

Would anyone want to run the gauntlet and cross the various streets just to get to the centre of Silsden, particularly if it is built on the beck side? The authorities don't feel the need to ensure that folk are able to cross the trunk road safely so, presumably, not shoppers either.

When they extended the existing Tesco in Skipton I was part of a focus group which was members of the public who were asked to attend in small groups by a research company to express our views on the kind of products and services that we would or would not like Tesco to provide in Skipton. There were some things that they were told by Craven Council they were not allowed to provide as they wanted to keep visitors into the town centre, such as Cafe, more than a few rows of clothing or homewares, there were a few others but its been a number of years since I attended and I can't remember. It would be nice to think if we do get a store, as we are hardly going to get much choice of whether we do or so not get one, that a similar thing might happen so we can keep the pressure off local businesses in some way.
