Posted on behalf of Shona Sharp
I have come across an old photo of Silsden Football team winning the Keighley and district shield 1908-1909. But can't find anything about them or there win. I was wondering if you could throw some light on the team of this time
Thanks, Shona Cramlington Northumberland |

It will be the Keighley & District league 'Butterfield shield'. The side won the league title that season ahead of Keighley Celtic.
Other local sides at the time were Silsden Clarence and Silsden Athletic.
Would love to see a copy of the photo. |

This was one of many successes by Silsden Football Club in the early 20th century. By 1922, they had won the Keighley Charity Cup five times; they always paraded the cup up from the railway station,in a torchlight procession behind a brass band and were welcomed by hundreds of spectators along the route. When they won it in 1914, the club chairman said there had never been such a vast congregation of people in Silsden - "a grand tribute to a team of lads who paid all their own expenses and played for the love of the game." Soon afterwards, many of these lads went to the trenches of the Great War. In 1922, the Cup came back to Silsden on a motor coach for the first time, with the club's colours on the front. |

Some of these players in your picture were in the Silsden team for many years. Tom Blakey, Arthur Windle and Willie Booth (who became captain) played in the very first year that the club was formed (1904). There is a great pic of these first players in Neil Cathey's book "A Pictorial History of Old Cobbydale." |
