Hello all you Cobbydalers out there, please put on your thinking caps and help us out here.
My son has just fiished his A levels (yes it makes me feel old) and needs a job to save up before Uni in September. He is willing to do anything (within reason) that he can get to in under an hours travelling. Local would be better though. He's a bright lad, friendly and willing. Has some office experience and worked in the library for a little bit.
If you know of anything at all please either post here or give us a call on 653224.
Many thanks. Jonno. |

Many thanks. Jonno. Your son should be looking for work by himself. Would you be with him at the interview. |

Tom Day....I'm sure that jonno's son is looking for jobs himself, but why should his family not help him? And I don't expect they would want to go to the interview! It's tough getting work these days, your comment is a bit sad, get a life Tom. |

Unfortunately just about everywhere we can think of either has no vacancies or is somewhere he'd not be able to get to on public transport (within reason), or he's applied to those we've found and not heard back yet.
Hence I've decided to ask lots of people. He was on the phone for a good hour or more yesterday trying to find something thru friends etc but a post on here will reach loads more people who might know of a job opening.
If you were my son Tom I'd help you find a job if I could |

Jonno, sorry I can't help, but a few words of praise for both yourself and your son. Not many these days would be so keen to find summer work. WELL DONE LAD. A credit to his parents. |

Jonno have you tried the co-op ... It seems they have a company wide recruitment freeze at present, recession and all, you know how it is...

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. |

If you were my son Tom I'd help you find a job if I could Fair comment, and I apologise for any offence I've caused. It's just that I have to graft really hard as a self employed worker. I've tried to set on young lads on two occasions recently and in both cases been let down badly.
They both started with a bang, but honestly both slacked off in week two, were ringing in with migraines by week three. In both cases I left it that when the headaches had gone they should call me. They didnt.
I paid just over the minimum wage, picked them up from home, decorating...it's not dirty or dangerous and I didn't expect miracles but the sad fact for me was that they showed no enthusiasm, not for decorating, fair enough, but for work. I just could not believe how they were desperate for work and two weeks later took me for granted. They clearly didn't make the connection between the work and the money, well, they did to start with a bang as I said but then just gave up the work bit and wanted the money bit. They really didn't grasp that phoning and texting all day while working was not on and when I mentioned it were astonished.
I'm sorry. I just get cross because I've employed one person, and tried two more and the work ethic bit, that connection between work and pay, fizzles out so soon. I did feel that the lads I set on thought they were doing me a favour!!! They couldn't sustain 5 regular days of working and ... |

I can now see where you're coming from Tom. It just takes some of us a bit longer to make that connection between working and getting paid I guess. Your experience reminds me of when I sacked a lad, he was only a temp and didn't care. He was making loads of stupid careless mistakes, drawing cheques off a payment system and duplicating, triplicating and worse and making tons of work for me to correct his mistakes. Gave him three warnings, sat with him to make sure he knew how to do it and it was fine, as soon as the pressure of me sat there was gone the mistakes came back. He lasted a whole week, probably should've gone on day two or three but I was soft back then. When I sacked him he said he was surprised he'd lasted that long and he was off to France to teach ski-ing. |

Why not try for a full time proper job?
Once in the job he could sign up for the OU, get a degree, get paid and no student debts.
In Tuesday's Guardian there was a story of a lass, 3 As at A level, Cambridge place. Started as a nursery assistant and signed up for OU. Got a relevant degree, practical experience and at the age many are leaving University has a good managerial job, car and buying own house.
It is an old joke, but what do you say to an honours graduate?

Wife asked about Co-op job yesterday. They won't entertain someone who's going away in September.
There is no way he could do a degree in Digital Forensics on the OU. Plus the OU is not cheap either.
Thanks for the tip about the Co-op job. |

yep, just check the OU website and they offer a course in Computer Forensics and Investigations but in the small print it says
quote ...you would need to complete further courses to become a fully qualified forensic technician or investigator.
So you might as well just do the proper degree course to start off with. |
