IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : Dog Mess !!!!! |
|
MBR |
whilst out walking today in and around town - I could not help but notice the almost obscene amount of dog mess on almost every road and path - ruining what should be a beautiful winter scene around this wonderful town of ours... And for some reason, some of those dog owners who do actually do pick up 'their' mess, appear to be happy to dispose of these little bags of joy , at the side of paths or slinging in to trees ????? What is up with these dog owners !!! i can only commend the action of babba100 for the 'poo poster Friday' - hopefully this action may stir some conscience in those responsible.... |

i very much doubt it will ever bother them mbr, always seems to be far worse when clocks go back as its dark longer, they either take em out very early morning or late at night while its dark,at least a couple have been busted up in howden road cemetary,1 for non pick up of poo the other 4 not having dog on lead, but these posters that will be going up will have zero affect im afraid to say |

ive never understood that either you bag it then throw it or leave it there i personally bag it and adapt my walking route to the nearest bin (having had a dog and walked it round silsden for 5 years i know were most are) its not very far to any bin in the town centre even if im up fishbeck lane or a mile or two down the canal still go to nearest bin its not difficult unfortunately for some it is ![]() |

I had a bag of dog poo left on top of my grey recycle wheelie bin left out as I am waiting for a replacement. Why put it on top of the bin? Couldn't they be bothered to carry it home to their own bin? These people have no pride and are lazy. They are the scum of the earth and I'm ashamed to be of the same nationality as them. They are probably reading this and laughing their heads off. This dog mess is getting out of hand and it is time they need naming and shaming. I am considering installing a CCTV camera. |

We went along the canal yesterday, via the steps from the viaduct. Quite obviously, someone must use it on a regular basis, absolutely littered with the stuff and would appear to be the same large dog. Wherever you walk now in Silsden, the problem is the same, definately a dark night and morning problem. I regularly go over to Bradley Road, at one point there were 7 signs surrounding the Green area, does anyone take notice, like heck they do. Most folk do pick up and deposit in the bin provided, but others flout the idea. Pity we can't have some legislation that says if a persistent offender is caught, the dog could be removed and P.T.S. Drastic action that might deter people. I don't think for a minute that Poo Friday will have any long term results, it's been tried before in other ways and doesn't last long enough to make a difference. But Good Luck with that one. |

babba100 |
I dont think anyone expects Poo Friday to have long term results, but it is called being Pro-Active and as you point out often its the same dog everyday thats making a street/pathway littered with poo.... if one owner takes notice then that is potentially one street improved for the better... It niave to think all problems will be solved but its a shame to not try ! ![]() |

silsdens dog mess problem was in the keighley news the other week i have attached the letter below. Visit to town was marred by dog mess I write after a Christmas visit to my cousin in Silsden – a wonderful little town with incredible facilities – an idyllic place to live, you may think. However, I was left extremely appalled and saddened by the amount of dog mess throughout the town. We went to the tennis courts to test out my nephew’s new bike. Even though there are two large signs stating ‘Dogs Not Allowed’, there was a teenage girl walking a huge white husky-type dog and allowed it to defecate near the fence. She did not clean it up and, when challenged, just said she didn’t have a bag. I walked around the courts and noted at least another six piles of dog mess. We walked through the park to where all the ducks gather next the Post Office. The walk with three small children was difficult as there was dog mess all over the place, even in the middle of the footbridge that leads to Wesley Place near the church. The lane from Wesley Place alongside the river is like a minefield with some enormous piles of dog mess. We stopped at the area designated for young children. Due to the bad design of the gates, they were open and running freely inside were two Staffordshire-type terriers. We decided not to stay as there was also a considerable amount of dog mess in the vicinity. This is a small park in a small town but the amount of dog mess beggars belief! I have never witnessed anything like this. If these people were prosecuted, the message may spread. It wouldn’t cost the earth to post a couple of dog wardens or park rangers in plain clothes in this park for a few days. Martin Gillespie, Aberdeen |

yes think weve all seen that |

Mr Gillespie from Aberdeen is right, most places are taking some real action about this problem, but not here. Somebody needs to be fined heavily as a deterrent. Meanwhile visitors get a poor impression of Silsden when they see all the cr**. |

The poster campaign should be just a start to try and shame those irresponsible dog owners in to changing behaviour - afraid the town council need to take the lead or rather the baton from babba100 - may be task one of the local specials to catch one in the act and fine them , this then might act as a deterrent, as it is there obviously isn't one now.... |

in the words of " you can`t teach an old dog new tricks " getting people to do this is almost impossible unless you stand over them an shame them into it.There is a lane at the side of our house that is used by people who think its fine to give there dogs a five minute drag around the block and have the cheek to call this a walk, what they should be saying is honey i`m taking the dog out for a S***.anyway if i see them i try my best to shame them into picking it up,if you see them get out your phone take pictures of them comment on excuse me i think you`ve forgotten something. campaigns are all good and well but they are soon forgotten about. |

Last year I suggested that instead of spending hundreds (if not thousands) of pounds on T-shirts for schoolkids to get across a message about dog fouling, we should spend the money on the PCSO's time to catch some of these criminals. A few prosecutions with large fines would soon get the message to these people that the local community have had enough. As usual nothing happens, it is left to local people to tackle these people, we have no authority behind us. The PCSO's could sort some of them out, and the word would get around. Other councils in other areas have taken such an approach, with good results. The council need to press for action to be taken. And please don't tell me that I should be the one to action this....we have councillors to represent us....it's up to them to listen to what people want, and do something about it ![]() |

I know its hard to catch owners in the act. I have personally caught 2. The first was a chap in the park who let his pooch crap by a bench!... and it resulted in a slanging match ! (and me cleaning it up for him) the second was an elderly lady who played dumb and was happy to clean up when i presented her with a spare bag. I dont know what the answers is except i do know that as Silsden residents we can be pro-active. I am not niave to think such campaigns as 'Poo Poster Friday' will suddenly clear the streets and make all dog owners act responcibly but it raises the profile of the issue... it creates discussion and gives opportunity for more long-term discussion straight off the back. It is a problem, evidently a problem thats giving Silsden a bad reputation. I totally agree that what needs to happen is a fine, someone being caught and the message that dog fouling is not acceptable... how that happens depends on the support we get from Bradford Council/Wardens/Police. Bins for the poo bags to be put in (as opposed to local forna and flora) are always helpful too. I have made my complaint, i wonder if a petition would be useful... get names, show just how disgusting we all think it is.... dont ask me the specifics of said petition just a thought... for now. |

Can we not go a stage further and ask local business people if they would be happy to put photos up of those who are caught? Most people have a camera phone on their mobile- if people know they will be photographed and named and shamed in every shop window it may make them think twice? Just an idea....... |

Here is a business idea. (pun intended) Dog mess is, I think, a problem in most areas. If an enterprising film maker made a short film aimed at persuading people to clean up after their dog - a propaganda film. Then arranged for it to be shown at cinemas during the trailers, maybe on tv and maybe in other outlets. The film maker/distributor would recoup money by getting councils to invest in the film. All councils would benefit and the cost would be shared. Any creative entrepreneurs out there? |

I don't want this thread to end up bashing town councillor's... but their help and support would be much appreciated - so if aflca99 could raise this issue 'and' some of the actions suggested, at the next meeting , it would add weight to the 'campaign' started by babba100!!! |

Just wanted to add that i think the posters look fantastic, a really good effort by all. Ironically I actually stood in dog poo on Poo Poster Firday, ironic yes but i didn't see the funny side. A dog poo propaganda film.... i think i might just do that .... being the arty type .... but i dont want to get a name for myself as the crazy-silsden-poo woman ![]() |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) I've just seen this on the Craven Herald Website m.cravenherald.co.uk/news/10183504.New_action_groups_will_help_tackle_dog_litter_in_Embsay_with_Eastby/ It illustrates the point that it isn't just Silsden that has a problem with anti social dog owners. Councillors can only do so much, without public support. |

there is a full page article about dog mess in todays telegraph and argus, it lists how many incidents reported to dog warden by area it would seem that it is not just silsden! |

The picture below was taken at the top of Mitchell Lane - WHERE THERE IS NOT A BIN IN SIGHT. The snicket / Mitchell Lane is an entrance to the park, perhaps the Clean Up Silsden campaigne should also include the provision of bins where dog owners can use them - no excuses! ![]() |

New Road (Shed side) is absolutely disgusting for dog crap. It is always littered with other detritous too. There is no shortage of bins up there, of the green wheeled variety. There is no excuse,.no reason for it. It is out and out laziness! |

I am with you Gamekeeper on this ..... it doesnt matter if there were NO bins ... the lazy dirty so-and-so's have got hands...and bags... carry the bloody bag home !!!! The Hothfield street school had 30 signs all along the railings... YET someone let there dog poop under all those signs, next to a bin. If i found out who was responcible they better run cos' i'd be picking up the poo and throwing it at them !! No excuses, i have had dogs for the last 15 years and i always pick it up ... because i know its wrong to leave it. makes me really mad. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) I have just returned home from our morning walk, along the canal with 2 large dogs, poo bags and torch, bags deposited in the bin by Nobby Clarkes. Went along Hainsworth Road, a car pulling out of side road, so stepped back to allow the lady full vision. Squidge, I stood in the biggest pile of dog muck. Fortunately had wellies on so found a deep puddle to wash my boot. FURIOUS, how anyone can walk around Silsden and avoid the stuff I do not know. A mine field springs to mind. No area is better or worse than another, the streets are a disgrace. What low life allows thier animal to defacate and not have the decency to pick up defies the imagination. My rant over for the day. |

Hi Peter - Just noted your post re 'poo' bins - unsure just what you are advocating !! are you suggesting that 'if' there are no bins , then dog owners are let off the hook some how???? The fact that there are no bins near a poster shouldn't have any bearing on anything - dog owners should bag it and (at worse)bin it at home ..... |
