IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Someone asked if i remembered anything about Silsden House. It was maybe above where the Cornwall Avenue housing estate is now. Anyone any knowledge, or better still photos of it, i had never heard of it? |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Yes your right it was above Cornwall Ave. If you look on google maps the driveway on Skipton Road after Dell Croft is "Silsden House Gardens". Might be a picture in Neil Cathays book I think |

There is a photograph in the A4 version of Neil's book. I remember my father telling me it was pulled down during one of his leaves for the army, so if correct that must put is about 1943 is. And that the rubble was used to form the foundations, when the river bridge was widened. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) I was told there was a big white house with a large gateway and drive somewhere a bit higher than the new Crossfield housing. It was maybe knocked down in the war or had the gardens all turned into allotments in the Dig for Victory campaign. There is still a stream that runs through Cornwall Avenue which was used for water by the people working these patches. These were then turned into houses, Cornwall, Gloucester etc. My auntie remembers her father and uncle having one of these allotments. |

Posted on behalf of Jim Can you please post these two links in the Silsden House thread, the first map there is a slider that shows 'now and then' but only works on some browsers: maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15&lat=53.9154&lon=-1.9425&layers=6 then this map is just an old map maps.nls.uk/view/102344854 PS Use mouse and shift to zoom map |

There are lots of interesting things to note on this map: The school on Bolton Road is shown The Methodist Chapel, now the Catholic Church No park No extension at the back of the Town Hall A lack of housing estates and I'm sure you will find lots more. |

Moorfield House which was demolished, I think in 1953.Haunted by an old man walking his dog by all accounts. |
