IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

I have just had a phone call from Microsoft Windows to say my computer has been sending error messages to windows to say my computer has been hacked . Luckily i am not daft and questioned him (or interrogated him as my hubby would say)till his only reply was to reel of lots of my personal details this is obviously a scam and an I.T friend has confirmed that windows will never contact you so please tell them where to go if they ring you happy :)

Must be going through a local list as I had one too. If I am not to busy I lead them on a bit to waste their time. Bit weird as I said I was using Linux and they still insisted on giving me a web address to type in. When he asked what had come up on screen I said grass. I then explained that grass is green, unlike me and rung off. I wasn't even at the computer.

I run the Computer Repair Shop on Kirkgate & I've had a few of my customers mention that they've received similar calls from people claiming to be Microsoft.
I always advise them to register the number on which they are receiving these calls with the Telephone Preference Service
www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/
This effectively makes it illegal for these people to contact you (which you can advise them of on the off chance that they call again).
As well as this, you will also stop receiving calls of a similar nature completely (Junk/Marketing/Sales calls).
I'd also advise you to run a complete Virus scan if you do happen to have followed their instructions.
Just a bit of advice...

I received 3 similar calls last week. I'm not sure if the TPS would be effective as the calls were from outside of the UK in my cases.

I had one yesterday asking what type of TV I had? Seemed a weird question as it was obviously a poor English speaker. Unfortunately in a hurry so put the phone down but was wondering if anyone else has had this one and what they are after.
