at last nights council meeting it was announced by bradford councils highways that united utillaties are to put in a new gas main all the way up kirkgate starting 20 july, we will be subject to 14 weeks of ROAD CLOSURES, great innit ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() for some reason bradford didnt think it right to let us know any sooner, they have only known about it for the last 12 MONTHS.![]() ![]() ![]() I was hopeing our new mayor would give you all this bad news![]() ![]() ![]() |

this post has been edited 2 time(s) you must have been reading my mind skippy! (about the title, and hoping it's not Autumn as well!)not only will the main road be closed, but Elliot street and Howden road too. they will be controlled with three way traffic lights. united utilities did'nt even bother to turn up to the meeting, and i'm sure you will all know of their track record i.e crosshills! parking will be stopped on the main road and at some point New road will have to close as well. As far as Howden rd is concerned the roadworks will go up as far as Craven drive. STC spoke passionately for the people of Silsden, and demanded a public consultation to which Bradford said NO. This will have serious implications for anyone needing to use these roads, including school buses, because despite BFD saying the work would be done in the school holidays,14 weeks is 8 weeks beyond that. Bfd have known about this as Skippy says for 12 months, and yet only turned up last night at the request of the District councillor, when asked when they would have told silsden, their reply was they would have been getting in touch. This will also have serious implications for any blue light traffic, and when asked what they were going to do about that the reply was,"they will get through" BFD get your act together now. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Had the new mayor not been off work sick today and only got out of bed at 2.00pm I am sure he would have done so skippy ![]() Perhaps though skippy you can confirm that he vigorously fought Silsden's corner! The lack of consultation is disgraceful! |

Skippy, what implications will all this disruption have on the Gala? |
|
| skippy |
grandad i asked the officer from bradford if they would delay any works until after our gala, due to saftys sake, he is going to get somebody to contact me but rest assured the gala will go ahead even if the good hole filling fairies have to work all through the night before![]() |

interestingly enough when asked why the gala committee had to give 6 months notice to close the road for just three hours the council were told it was different legislation!!!! when asked why they could'nt defer the project until a proper consultation had taken place......health and safety reasons. why was'nt the work undertaken immediately then?....not an emergency! I believe the official terminology is jargonised bullshit. I wonder if the local bookies will start taking bets on:- a,how far will traffic be backed up? b,how long before a worker sets fire to a pipe? c,how long over the 14 weeks will they take? d,how many times will the lights actually work? thankyou BFD for involving us all every step of the way. |

I asked at the last Annual Town Council Meeting why STC didn't seem to have a clue what was going on in Silsden. I see my question was taken seriously and got to the right people . We should all call ourselves mushrooms (kept in the dark and fed on s***) |

We should all call ourselves mushrooms (kept in the dark and fed on s***)The sad thing is Peter that only ONE of the district councillors had only just been told, that's why an officer of the council turned up. Although this work will be carried out by United Utilities, Bradford Council officers have known about the works for some time and failed to inform us. I asked for the works to be put off by twelve months to allow for consultation and they point blank refused. I don't think that the officer concerned will forget his trip to Silsden for some time! STC will stay on this case............ |

I am appalled to see that the road is to be dug up again - isn't it the third or fourth summer in a row now? and without significant warning and during one of the worst economic years in living memory. This could spell the end of many of the businesses in Silsden - including my own. So, before i jump off the deep end and get really annoyed, does anyone actually know what the timetable is for the works? - the contractors for the culvert works last year seemed very considerate and kept disruption to a minimum and were able to provide a reasonable timetable (which they almost kept to). Does 16 weeks of works mean 16 weeks of a closed Kirkgate? I doubt it but you never know. or does it mean 2 weeks of complete closure and 10 weeks of partial. Where and when can i find out this imformation? My staff deserve as much notice as possible before i am forced to do the unthinkable!! |

All very good questions, I would also ask where will the buses be diverted to if they can’t turn up Elliott St, How will the artic that come to the mill at the bottom of Elliott St get in and out, and most important of all how will the Fire, Ambulance and Police get through in an emergency? If Bradford has known about this work for 12 months, why did they waste our money resurfacing Kirkgate then repainting the white/yellow lines before it took place? |

While one deplores the attitude of the council and the gas contractor I suspect this is a job that has to be done. As anytime is going to be problematic is that really the issue? It seems to me that the biggest complainers are those used to parking down the street so that they do not have to walk to the services. The car park is free for the first 30 minutes, but it to far for many to walk. Of course the situation is left as it is, Silsden blows up and makes world news!! The logical solution is some practical traffic management. The area can be by-passed, but this needs control and some thought. Interesting to see what they do. |

This one for ye old cobbydalers. The gas main for Silsden runs from where the gasworks once was. Does it go straight under the canal, or under the road under the canal, or over the road on the bridge? With Sykes Lane being below the canal I cannot see how works above the can would affect that connection, unless the position of the gas main is strange, like up John Street and back down the main street? Does anyone know? |

just recieved an email from the town clerk a meeting/ seminar is to be held in the town hall on june 24 from 5.30 to 8.30, united utilities will be in attendance make sure you all turn out. |
|

Thanks for that! Will try and be there - may even be able to drag a couple of other local traders with me! I'm not disputing that the work needs doing, just really annoyed that the notice is short and we have no idea roughly how much disruption there will be to each area that is to be dug up. Hopefully this meeting will help |

From the Keighley News www.keighleynews.co.uk/news/4431135.print/ Several town centre roads will be closed as work is carried out to replace gas mains. And town councillors are furious that they have been given just a few weeks’ notice of the scheme. After pressure from Silsden’s new town mayor, Cllr Alan Edwards, highways officer Dave Greenwood admitted at Thursday’s meeting that his department had known about the work for over a year but he said it was the duty of United Utilities to inform the relevant people. United Utilities has since written to residents warning them which roads will be affected and inviting them to a public meeting, to discuss the work, at Silsden Town Hall on June 24 (5.30-8.30pm). The gas mains work is due to begin on July 6, with major work beginning on July 20, and it will last for 16 weeks. Keighley Road and Kirkgate will be closed to access from Elliott Street, Aire View and New Road during the school summer holidays to minimise disruption. Two-way temporary traffic lights will be put on Keighley Road from the junction with Mill Banks to the canal, and the lights will be moved along the road as the project progresses. Once the engineers reach the junction of Kirkgate, Keighley Road and Clog Bridge, three-way lights will need to be put in operation. Both sets of temporary lights will be manned between 9am and 5pm to help minimise disruption. ...attend the meeting if you want to get home before 8pm! He [Cllr Atkinson] suggested putting up signs on the Aire Valley trunk road requesting that HGV drivers avoid Silsden to get to Addingham for the duration of the road closures, which Mr Greenwood agreed to consider. Northern Gas Networks’ director Chris Gorman added: “We will do everything we can to minimise any disruption. [Anyone have the telephone number for Chris Gorman?] |

Where in Silsden is the Aquaduct ? Do they mean the canal bridge ? I alway thought an aquaduct carried water over something. |
|
| Bob T |
Your dead right tetley drinker the aquaduct is down Hainsworth road locally known as under culvert or jumping jack, directions from main st across clog bridge and turn sharp right |
|
| gazzer |
I notice the council have marked out area's on Keighley Road to be patch repaired. Is this where they will dig up and will it be repaired just before its dug up? |
|
| Peter |
Well today is the 6th July when it is all supposed to start........ 18 weeks.... perhaps it will take the 681 weeks as stated on the sign on Keighley Road. ![]() ![]() and while I'm on the subject of signs.. what is the point of putting a sign warning motorist of delays at the 30mph limits of Silsden ie on Keighley Road and at the top of Bolton Road, by the time you read that you will be sitting in the traffic jam. The signs should be off the Steeton roundabout, and the Addingham roundabout, + a warning to HGVs to take a different route. |
