IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. I understand we are to be asked if we want a Bradford Mayor to rule us.Personally a "Bradfordian" running the Council will not serve "our" interest's.The sooner this Keighley?Ilkley Council gets the go ahead or we join with Craven the better. I shall be voting against a Bradford Mayor. |

As you know, skippy, I have already suggested you for Mayor of Bradford in another topic post, based in the old Conservative Club premises. But we have to vote YES to get a Mayor first, so cast your votes next week, who knows? ![]() |

there seems to be a lack of information coming out about this, If it could be guaranteed that we would get a well respected well known person with a good head for business voted in as mayor then it might be a good thing otherwise it seems to me a dangerous gamble to give one person so much power especially as they would be in charge for 4 years and we would not be able to get rid of them if they made a pigs ear of it.I really don't think though that people know enough about it to make a decision |

From the T & A Elected mayor would be a disaster for the district 10:15am Thursday 26th April 2012 Next Thursday, the people of Keighley and Ilkley will face arguably our most important vote in almost four decades. It was 1974 when both towns lost their independence and were frog-marched into the new Metropolitan Borough of Bradford. Despite the efforts of many good people from Keighley, Ilkley and the surrounding areas, we have never since been in control of our own destiny with Bradford City Hall instead being empowered to chart our course. And despite Keighley and Ilkley residents paying more in council tax than the three Bradford constituencies combined, we have seen a very poor return for our money. I have long believed the time has come for us to be given back responsibility for our own futures and allowed to set up our own local authority, perhaps in partnership with Shipley. But, before then, a huge threat awaits in the form of a Bradford-based directly elected mayor being handed significant powers and resources to shape our lives. Decisions on schools, adult social care, regenerations projects, road repairs, frequency of bin collections and grant funding will be his or her sole responsibility. Such an outcome would, in my view, be a disaster for Keighley and Ilkley. This is not about party politics, it is about what is in the best interests of everyone who lives here. I therefore urge readers, no matter who you intend to support in the local elections being held on the same day, to put Keighley and Ilkley first by voting “no” in the mayoral referendum on Thursday, May 3. This is a real first, I agree with Kris Hopkins! Elected mayors may be good in some places but for Bradford and its neglected edges? I don't think so. The job always attracts charismatic, media experienced types who can get lots of votes, quick and somtimes dirty (scientific term). This isn't the X Factor or Britains got Talent. Once elected there's no real democratic accountabilty for 4 years. Is it likely that someone going for such significant power in Bradford has even heard of Silsden, Steeton and Eastburn and Addingham, let alone would prioritise their needs? At least with the current system your 3 councillors (hopefully working together with their party hierarchies) have a chance of steering events. I've already voted NO (postal). I advise you to do so too. In 4 years it may look different. Who knows! |
