Hopefully people have been convinced that the town does need both Tesco and Aldi. A better retail choice for all those who cannot afford to travel out of town and an answer to that derelict site that has no future for industrial use...
But this topic is not aimed at reviving a previous discussion...!
If the Aldi/Tesco schemes do get the green light lets think how we could maximise the benefits for the Town - here is one idea:
By lucky coincidence the Aldi/Tesco site sits right on a main bus route, which brings a big part of Silsden within a 5 minute bus ride of the new shops - great for those who cannot afford car! While the plans are still in the development stage why don't our counsellors lobby for there to be a dedicated bus drop off point outside the Tesco store? This would remove potential congestion caused by buses stopping on the Keighley Road and make shopping by public transport easier for the less mobile.
But lets be more ambitious! With a new bus turning point the next step would be for a lobby of Metro to get the Keighley/Skipton bus (66)to make a short route change to call at the new Tesco stop. This could be argued as providing car free access to our neighbours in Seeton, Eastburn and Crosshills. However think of the spin off benefits...!
- More than double the buses from the town to the station - a plus for Silsden! - A regular connection to Airedale - a plus for Silsden! - Double the buses to Keighley - a plus for Silsden! - At last a way of reaching Skipton by bus - a plus for Silsden!
All the above would open up employment opportunities to locals since our transport links would be massively improved.
Finally - and perhaps too ambitious, could we get the Burnley bus (25) to divert? Then more buses to Keighley and Airedale and even Boundary Mill!
Lets hope Councillors can negotiate some extra benefits from the new developments at no cost to the tax payer! |

Seems a little unlikely there would be a market for this - the Keighley bus starts in Keighley (big Sainsburys, huge Asda, large Morrisons) and goes through to Skipton (huge Morrisons, large Tesco). If people in Steeton or Eastburn want to shop, surely they'd go into Keighley. Likewise, if those in Cross Hills want to go shopping, they'd go to Skipton - then there's the Tesco 5 minutes from Ilkley bus station and the Morrisons Local a two minute walk from a Keighley-Ilkley stop. What might work though is expanding the 903 to a more regular circular service covering the new supermarkets (Bell Square > Dradishaw > Waterside > Tesco/Aldi > Station and back, with some of the services moving onto the Hospital, and/or Addingham) - that way, it might just be possible to timetable it to actually MEET trains at the station, rather than disappearing up the road as they arrive... |

You are probably right about the benefits for Steeton/Eastburn/Croshills... I was sneaking in the idea of a new bus turn in at Tesco to get the buses through Steeton to make a short detour into Silsden. The main benficaries would of course be Silsden residents with many more buses to the station and Keighley plus better access to Airedale and a new direct link to Skipton. Sort of self interest for Sildeners - but why not! |

I don't doubt your idea for a turning circle at Aldi/Tesco, but it's worth pointing out there is already a turning circle at the railway station, which was modified at huge cost to accommodate the longer busses, however the transport mandarins will not use it, apparently it's not suitable, although they can make the 90 degree turn into Elliot street. |

I will probably be accused of being negative, but do you know that steeton are getting a Morrisons store? All be it a small one opposite the end of Thornhill Rd, so I doubt that there residents will want to travel to Silsden. |

Yes but its only a Morrison Express store, so whilst it will be alright for the odd shopping items, people will quite willing travel from Steeton to Silsden for their Tesco, Aldi and Co-op full shop (as quite a few do already!) |
