This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Sad news if it's true.
The Bridge is the oldest inn in Silsden (with a history stretching back to the 1600s) and the Red Lion goes back well over 200 years.

Are you buying then localman?

I don't doubt if people felt they had a few bob to spare they'd get out and spend 'em. Most of us, me included, are feeling the pinch, I got a 2% pay rise this year and inflation is double that. Of course people are going to prioritise their spending.

If the likes of Tom Wrigg and Tommy Reynoldson were still about, Silsden pubs would be thriving. Any one remember any other "characters" from days gone by? Harry Umpers springs to mind as well.

i went in three of our pubs on a Tuesday night some weeks ago.firstly the kings arms. brilliant atmosphere and a folk club music thing going on. secondly the punch bowl.abysmal with staff that really didn't want to be there. thirdly the robin, that was the pits.there were four or five staff and friends propping up the bar for the night and a drunkard singing his heart out with his feet up on the tables.i rarely go out nowadays so maybe I'm one of the culprits of this towns social demise, but apart from the kings arms there is just nothing to tempt me back to my younger ways.

nabend, Nelson Holmes (rap a pap pa)John Spencer (lion landlord) Tommy Hickey, Jonny Gold Roland Bankcroft I could go on and on all must be turning in there graves when they see our local pubs closing down, all real characters something Silsden is now lacking its seems all we have now are plastic people who lead such boring lives and contribute zilch to our once great little town.

I was once told a tale about a conversation two of the local aged Silsden folk were havíng in a Barber's shop. Both claimed to be born and bred Silsdeners but one corrected the other by telling him he was born in Steeton and not Silsden and hence a fraud. Where were you born exactly Localman? Just out of interest!

I was born on the banks of the river cobby one Sunday wink ;) which was the day true Silsden folk went down there for a picnic so being born there I was also baptised there just under the small bridge then taken back up home on the back of Jack Narey's horse and cart so a true Silsdener is born in Silsden not in a Steeton hospital so please note if you were born in Steeton then your place of birth is Steeton not Silsden "fact" laugh :D
