The swing bridge east of Silsden is broken/collapsed. It has been secured in the open position for boats to go through but walkers will have to walk to the next bridge. According to British Waterways it will be weeks before it is corrected as a new mantle has to be made, the actual bridge lifted way and then re-balanced!

It's Brunthwaite Bridge on Brunthwaite Bridge Lane that's closed. Maybe it has been over used as a short cut during the dreaded roadworks wink ;)

As far as I know they have to make the swing bridges so if it needs parts it will take a few weeks.

Unless the town council were to create a human bridge over the canal!

That bridge hasn't been in too good condition anyway!

Does anyone know what if anything is being done about the bridge.
I looked down the lane today and it does not appear to be worked on at all.

I am guessing this will be a sometime never job !!

I suppose I'm being selfish here but I hope it takes a long time to repair because then it will inconvenience the a*sehole who went belting past me very dangerously and then turned and went down and over the bridge at nearly 100mph (seriously!!) and turned left. So if he was on his way home good, I hope the bridge being out adds a long time onto his journey home.

To everyone else who uses the bridge I hope it get's repaired very soon.

I believe there is a footpath to the bridge further up. Being a footpath though this means only pedestrians can go down to it.

looks like the swing bridge budget is being spent on the one at the Granby pub at Riddlesden, there's a sign there saying it will be shut for 12 weeks for repairs - & that's a new electronic one.

i think sadly there's a fair chance it may never be repaired; it doesn't provide access that can't be gained eleswhere. Also if it stays shut over winter which seems very likely, the lane will become unusable without any traffic to clear the silt & mud that quickly builds up there with heavy rain

I think contacting the people on theis page:
www.britishwaterways.co.uk/contact-us/north-east
will given anyone interested the answers.
The bridge is well used by walkers and cyclists. I have also seen agricultural vehicles using it, plus all those who know it as an occasional 'Silsden Bypass'.
Probably just waiting in the lengthening finance queue.

Thank you for your e-mail which I received on 23 July 2010 regarding swing bridges on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

It is the case that we currently have two swing bridges in the area out of operation. Brunthwaite Swing Bridge no. 192 and Booths Swing Bridge no. 195 have both been closed following failures of the bearings.

The issues with both bridges are severe and operation of the bridges is not possible at this time. We currently have a road diversion in place for Brunthwaite Swing Bridge and our contract management team have now instructed a team to complete works. It will take approximately two weeks to fabricate the required materials and following this, we expect the duration of works to take approximately four weeks.

With regards to Booths Swing Bridge, our works planner has advised that a new bearing must be procured before the bridge can be fixed. This will take approximately six to eight weeks. As such, the bridge will remain in-operable during this period and has been locked in the open position.

We do appreciate and understand the concerns raised by those who use these routes on a regular basis. However, the bridges have been closed on the grounds of health & safety and I can assure you that we will endeavour to address the problems in a swift and efficient manner. We apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result of these issues.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any queries regarding the above.

Kind regards,

Iain Weston

Is that the one just up the road from what used to be the 'snow white' launderette? If so I'd have to say that will be a far busier bridge and should fairly get priority.

Ahh I thought you meant Holden Bridge slightly further up from brunthwaite. I'd be suprised if brunthwaite was finished before december let alone before booths.
