Entering “dangers of balloons to wildlife” into Google throws up many illuminating and interesting articles, this is an extract from one of them:

“The danger lies in when the latex balloon fragments are ingested by wildlife and sea animals before they biodegrade completely away the animal will starve to death. Wildlife, such as deer and birds have been found dead in the forest because the latex blocked their natural passageway in the gut. Birds have been found strangled by the strings that were attached to balloons. Whales, dolphins, sea turtles and other forms of sea life have starved to death because their intestines become blocked with balloons.”

My Dad had pancreatic cancer and if he'd have found out sooner maybe he wouldn't have been one of those 97%. If letting these balloons off helps just one person or makes someone who suffered a loss from this evil disease happy is there really a problem?

Leave them be... go talk about the dog muck

Well said shazza.
I'm sure, anyone having faced a close relative or friend succuming to the dreaded C, will no doubt have wished that they could have done something to stop it. The balloons are a small price to pay when loosing a loved one.
Also, thank goodness there are people out there willing to give their time, love, and efforts to such worthy causes.

Well cleary Offcumden's problem is that releasing balloons like this can harm wildlife. I'm all for raising awareness of all types of cancer and fund-raising for them, but perhaps there is some kind of 'rubber/latex' that could be used for these balloons that would degrade within a few hours, thereby minimising the effects on wildlife.

Such as...

There are two types of balloons in wide general use - latex and mylar. This distinction is important because each type requires different handling. Latex balloons are easily identified by their elastic character and are composed of natural rubber sap and small amounts of non-toxic coagulants and pigments. They are 100% bio-degradable. When exposed to outdoor elements they are completely consumed by soil or water micro-organisms at a rate quicker than that experienced by an oak leaf under identical conditions. In much the same way maple syrup is harvested from the maple tree, the production of latex balloons contributes positively to the preservation of tropical rain forests.

The important thing is not to use string, ribbon, valves etc to seal the balloon, just hand tie a knot and show the card between the balloon and the knot.

EDIT google is everyone's friend

The problem here is the 'cost' of getting in charitable donations.

Personally I prefer to donate without recieving a badge, band etc. although that is not as bad as contributing towards someones holiday trip (the sponsored travellers of various kinds).

Human nature being what it is I doubt if there is an answer
