Well, if they cannot get anyone local I am sure there are plenty of fully skilled Romanians and Bulgarians available. Thanks of course to the blessed Maggy pushing services over manufacturing. One sows what one reaps.

PS: the new range of Dacia cars from Romania are getting good write ups so there will be plenty with the skills needed out there.

Oh the good old days pre Maggie. I had a British built Triumph Dolomite and it was bit of a dog, turns out it came off the production line at the height of the union power when they were striking all the time. Eventually got another older version when a car could go through the production line strike free.
After that it became too expensive to make cars in this country. Not just cars everything mainly down to Chinese workers earning peanuts. But now this country is back making stuff the World wants. It will never get back to how it was.At least we make more cars in this country today than just before Maggie came to power!

I hadn't banked on this kind of response. Politics do come into it in a very round about manner. On the whole, it is my opinion that it is good to see companies both old and new prospering in Silsden. Silsden NEEDS jobs, whether full or part time. Whether anyone agrees or not, the government (whichever party is calling the shots) are making some from of progress, even if it is in fits and starts.

In the last year, Silsden has seen most of the industrial units built become operational, Jackson's have expanded, Habasit Rossi are improving their premises, securing jobs for the future, DB Dental have won a prestigious business award, many small businesses have opened in the new units.

Looking at Silsden from this perspective, the town is moving forward in a positive way, which can only mean that the finances of the residents can finally improve/stabilize.

When you look at Keighley and other towns, there are still countless derelict mills, warehouses, factories and other industrial units, in varying stages of decay. At least Silsden can honestly say that there is very little dereliction in its boundaries!

Funny about the derelict mills in Keighley. Evidently not all of them. One is even working three shifts producing top quality worsted - and that was on national radio quite recently.

However - the political decision to concentrate on services instead of manufacturing will be with us a long time.

As for blaming the unions for all the problems. If the management had been up to the job the work force would not have felt the need to line up with the union. Unions were a reaction to crap management. That some of them got out of control was again down to crap management. British workers are often Lions lead by British donkeys. All the foreign car manufacturers in the UK did not use donkeys for managers. Fortunately manufacturing companies in the UK have learnt those lessons and management within manufacturing is generally fine.

Interestingly the crap managers seem to have gone into the service industries. Watch the rise of unions fighting zero hour contracts and all the other dodgy management techniques some of these firms use.

Heard a story about Top of the Pops in the 70's. The lead singer of a band moved a microphone stand(as singers do) just 2 feet which led to a technicians walkout because it was a union mans job to move it. Something was going to give.

Crap management at the BBC - Jimmy Saville and silly union rules.

Good management at the BBC - no perverts and good working relations.

Those who can do. Those who cannot manage.
