Posted on behalf of Andrew:

Hi there
I hope you might be able to shed some light on my great grandparents families who were both from Silsden.

My grandfathers name was Gill and my grandmothers name was Green and her fathers name was Roberts.

I believe one of the Gill's or was it Green's happened to be Chair of the Town Council going back in the 1800\'s

Any information you might find time to provide would be greatly appreciated.

My uncle Mitchell lived in Silsden up until his death in 1980's and he was a world famous wrestler in his day.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Andrew Webster

First of all, Mitchell Gill, the wrestler. He was born in 1910 to Alfred Gill (raised in Manningham, Bradford)and Grace Gill (formerly Green, of Silsden)). He wrestled all over the world (there are some great posters of him at the Imperial War Museum North,in Manchester.) But for a while he also became a boxer, after meeting British Empire heavyweight champion Larry Gains at a famous bout in Bradford. Mitchell changed his name to Pat Delaney - but only boxed for a couple of years in the 1930s, and returned to wrestling. A lot of photos and newspaper cuttings still exist of him. Older Silsdeners will recall that, on his retirement, Mitchell Gill ran a grocery ship in Bolton Road for several years. His wife Kathleen Gill (nee Rogers)was a local teacher.
You suggest that one of the Greens or Gills was a chairman of the "Town Council" in the 1800s. You may be a century out!! There was no "Silsden Council" until 1893, although its predecessor, the Local Board, had been in existence since 1865. First chairman of the Council was Charles Weatherhead, whose family ran the Red Lion Inn for most of the 19th century. Could you be thinking of Fergus Green, who became a prominent councillor, and chairman in the mid 20th century? He was the brother of Grace Gill(nee Green) mentioned above? Ferg was a clog maker, linked to the Green family who ran their own clog making business in Sykes Lane, Silsden. Quite a bit of information exists about Fergus if this is the man you are looking for. And there are still family members in and around Silsden.

I wonder

Thos Green in Sykes Lane wasn't a clogmaker, they owned a forge which made clog irons for the clogmaking trade.

Im just reading a magazine article about clog and nail making in Silsden. Thomas Greens was founded in 1874. There is a photo from 1905 of the staff with an F S Green and a Fergus Green.

Thomas Green the clog iron maker was the uncle of Grace Gill (nee Green) and Fergus Green. I can't give you any information about Mitchell Gills family but I can help with Grace Green. Her parents were William Gill (b about 1843 Silsden) and Betty Roberts (b abt 1845 Silsden).
William Green's parents were Leonard Green (b abt 1801 Keighley) and Mary Dixon (b abt 1800 Silsden)
Leonard's mother was called Grace Green but I don't have any record of his father.
For Mary Dixon's parents I have Thomas Dixon and Ann Greenwood but I have not verified this so I might be barking up the wrong family tree.
Grace Gill's (ne Green) siblings are;
Thomas Green b 1829 (clog iron man and my Great Great Grandfather
Ann Green b 1830
Fanny Green b 1835
Margaret Green b 1840
William Green b abt 1843 (father of Fergus)

The FS Green that is mentioned is my Great Grandfather Frank Stirk Green, son of Thomas

Need to make a correction to my post - the list of siblings I have given you is wrong - they are an earlier generation Grace Greens.
So Grace Gill (nee Green) siblings are;
Thomas Green born abt 1868
Mary Green born abt 1871
Fanny Green born abt 1875
Margaret Green born abt 1876
Janet Green born about 1879
Fergus Green born abt 1883

Grace was born abt 1886

Sorry about the confusion - too many names the same!!
Fergus Green
