 Community groups to showcase their activities at event in Silsden's St James' Church By Miran Rahman AN EVENT due to be staged in Silsden this weekend will show people some of the many ways they can get involved with their local community. The first Silsden Showcase takes place in St James' Church on Saturday (Oct 11) from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Organisers say they aim to build on the spirit of unity fostered by the passage of the Tour de France earlier this summer. At least 20 local and voluntary groups have booked a table at the occasion so Silsden residents can come and find out more about the opportunities on offer in the town. It is also an opportunity for community groups to recruit new members and volunteers. The event will feature a presentation of the knitted yellow jerseys that decorated the town during the Tour de France's visit in July. Nearly 750 of these yellow jumpers will be presented to Mission Direct, a charity working in various countries in Africa, where they will be used to keep new born babies warm. The chairman of Churches Together in Silsden, David Griffiths, said: “Silsden really came together well for the visit of the Tour, and this event is to build on that by giving the people of Silsden a way to discover the range of options for community involvement which there are in our great town.” © Copyright 2001-2014 Newsquest Media Group |
