IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : Bridge over the beck by Post Office - unsafe!!? |
|
wahiba |
Today there was someone putting up a sign stating the bridge was closed and other routes had to be found. I casually asked what it was about and evidently the bridge is unsafe and needs a structural engineer to look at it. Mind you he did comment on the heavy traffic it took!! I suspect there is an I beam underneath that is showing signs of being rusty. Looking at the bridge, and that central pillar I am not sure how the bridge could be declared unsafe. In practise how are they going to close it. a bit of tape, a bollard. Unless they fill it in with barbed wire I am not sure how any other arrangement is not going to end up in the beck. Strikes me as a bit of health and safety back covering. Actually if it collapsed it is highly unlikely to go quickly and the resulting blockage of the beck will cause all the problems. Anyone know what it is about, or was it a delayed Bradford april fools exercise? |

I saw the notice but no one about to ask.It is fastened to a lampost near post office and I bet hardly anyone will see it. If its unsafe it should say so and perhaps they should put tape across |

It's the bridge further up which goes into the park that's shut and they've shut it by cementing 2 metal fences into the ground at each side. At least now there are notices, it was shut on Thursday with no warning what so ever so those of us with young children and pushchairs going to the park found ourselves a bit stuck. |

I think it is the same bridge that was damaged and closed during the floods of 1999. |

The much used footbridge across the beck to the park has been closed, condemned by a structural engineer. Metal barriers have been concreted into the pavement across path at both end of the bridge. I went down to take some pictures, I found a sign "SILSDEN BECK FOOTBRIDGE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE - PLEASE FIND AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE" on the floor by the skate park. It had been secured to the barrier by a couple of tie wraps but I propped it up to take the pictures. ![]() ![]() While taking the pictures two youths came along and seeing the notice removed it to read, placed the notice on the floor and on vaulting the barriers one was heard to say "Goldilocks to that" (I may have misheard them)! ![]() The barriers look very permanent. The bridge should be repaired or replaced as a matter of urgency. More pictures: www.silsden.net/news/2008/footpath_beckbridge/footpath_bridgedamage.htm |

I would like to see the engineers report.Yes it does need replacing but at first glance all that looks to have happened is some cosmetic concrete has come away from the RSJ's through rust expansion rather than decay |

I suppose the sign at the post office is becasue of the access to the path beside the beck that leads to the bridge. Out of curiosity if the bridge by the post office is not the footbridge over the beck what is it, or what is its specific name? Actual barriers on actual bridge seem to be designed to keep the unfit at bay. I assume therefore that the fit are expected to have time to run when it goes!!! Being next to the skate rink etc. I am sure the kids are going to take a lot of notice. Even so it looks like a barrier that even someone my age (61) could easily get across. Bradford had better fix it quick otherwise they will be getting sued because someone got injured due to inadequate barriers. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Think you'll find it's because the foundations have been scoured out by the water as well...........and it's therefore unsafe....that's why it was reported..... |

I have received the following information about the footbridge: Funding is organised and work likely to be done at the end of summer. When a design has been finalised they will contact the Town Council to come and explain the process etc. This will be a replacement and will need planning and conservation consent. ![]() ![]() |

Four months and this is the first bit of feedback we have had.... communication is not their strongest subject! I looked on the BradMet website to find out about the bin situation.... nothing, no comments, nothing. If they just let people know what is going on they would have a lot less hassle. ![]() |

Not sure that that's 100% correct Peter - I wasn't there but it was my understanding that they gave a very full report at the annual town meeting. Think four months to sort it is very commendable |

Peter |
I didn't go to the Annual Town Meeting and looking at the minutes there is no mention of the bridge in the minutes. Perhaps it was a later meeting which hasn't been published yet? Perhaps there is a case for publishing some items of public interest before STC ratify the minutes. The local press publish and get it wrong sometimes, perhaps it should come from "the horses mouth" first! |

Wasn't a main STC meeting Peter, presumed it was the annual town meeting, or maybe a forum meeting. I believe someone from Bradford went through it all though. Sorry I can't help more. Still think it's a good performance getting it sorted so quick ![]() |

can someone please tell me who actuall closed the bridge? if it was bradmet surly it should have a bradmet notice on it not a plain notice. am just woundering if its the people who are buliding the house when the church is pulled down! are they trying to get people use to working other ways round to the park. not seen the plans for the new houses but have been told that the gardens wiill go to the beck! i may be on the wrong lines but it has happened before. |
![]() |
wahiba |
If the gardens run to the beck then they are going to have a public footpath through the end of their gardens. Closing it would be difficult as there is no obvious re-direction route. It must have been a public footpath regularly used for a very long time. if so very difficult to close. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Now that Silsden Beck bridge has been fenced off is it going to stay that way? The money that has been spent closing the bridge would have gone a long way to pay for a new bridge. It's about right for Bradmet to waste money like that !!!!! Two men are putting up a wood fence this morning. |

From the agenda of Silsden Town Council on 7 August 2008 quoteHaving nothing better to do I attended this meeting, what you see above is about all that anyone knows about the replacement bridge. The important thing is there is money allocated and it will be replaced but it will take time. The problem is the conservation area boundary falls on the park side of the bridge which means although the bridge is not listed it does need permission to knock it down - must be a committee jobs worth! The replacement also needs to be approved and this will have to go though the planning approval process and importantly be approved by the STC and us hopefully who will have to live with the structure. At the meeting on the 7 Aug concern was raised about people ignoring the barrier, climbing over or walking along the parapet and I would assume this is the reason a more substantial fence is now being put up. Expect nothing to happen in a hurry but something is being done to replace the footbridge. |

It is my understanding that a representative from Bradford will report back to STC at the September meeting. |

Just a reminder that a Bradford rep will be explaining what is ahppening to the bridge at the September STC meeting. |
