This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

For the past few years I've been researching my family tree and one person I'm keen to know more about is my Gt Gt Grandfather George Frear Broadhead Ex landlord of the Punch Bowl Inn, Silsden

What I do know is he was born at Heath Common, South Yorkshire in 1881 but had moved to Silsden via Cononley in or around 1900 he is recorded as being a "Bus Driver" in the 1901 census and living at home with his father & Mother in St John Street, I know in later life he became landlord of the Punch Bowl, ! suspect he was landlord of the Punch Bowl either in late 1920' or 30's.

He had 4 children Mitchell b 1904 - d 1967 a firefighter with Silsden Fire brigaid/Overlooker at taylors mill, Emma b 1904 - d 1904 Mitchell's twin sister who sadly died when about 6 months old Harry b 1908 - d 1970c (I don't know much about Harry) Margaret (known as maggie) b 1906 - d 1986

I also suspect he is buried in St James churchyard but since I live 200 miles away I can't check this out

so can anyone help me with any information about this man and his family

He was the publican of the Punch Bowl Inn by 1911 (according to the 1911 census). You may be able to find out more about his time at the Punch Bowl by going to www.keighleyhistory.proboards.com. A contributor on that site,Eddy Kelly, has a huge supply of information aboutthe district's inns and he seems very helpful with questions.
The obituary in the Keighley News for his son Mitchell Broadhead, who died in 1967, said he was an overseer at Taylor Brothers, worsted spinners, until his health broke down. For many years he delivered Sunday newspapers, using a motor cycle combination. He was a local fireman for 22 years, joining in 1938. In September 1960 he was awarded the Queens Medal for long service. There is an excellent group photograph of him in the book "The History of Silsden Fire Brigade" by Neil Cathey.

thanks for the information I'll be able to update my family tree records and indicated the way forward to learn more and you've brought back a few memory's

I knew of Mitchell's Sunday paper round which covered most of the district not just Silsden though I didn't know he used a motorcycle & sidecar.

I have his queens medal for long service to the fire service at Silsden its a prized keepsake.

I was 11 when he died following a number of strokes over a 4 year period he hated being ill
