This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

There's Summerfield Residential Home up Skipton Road, my daughter worked there on work experience and they appeared to be very good.

I think the one on the way to Addingham you are thinking of is a caravan park, I think a lot of old(er) people live there but it's not a care home.

I've heard The Gables is a very nice home, there's also The Raikes(?) on Bradley Road is very nice too.

My mum works in a home which is very nice, but the one piece of advice I would give to anyone thinking about a family member going to live in one is to call in person without an appointment to have a proper look at how it's run. At least you'll get a real feel for the place without them being ready for you going.

Good luck

My mother was in the Raikes until her death at the end of last year. I visited her almost every day, so got to know it well. I can recommend it thoroughly, the staff are excellent.
Based on my own experience of trying to find a place for her, I offer the following advice.
1. Obviously, visit places. Look for things good or bad.
2. Remember that while the marketing hype shows happy seniors enjoying carefree retirement, the reality is that most people in a home will be in decline, either physical or mental. Be prepared for the reality.
3. Read the brochure homes will provide. Does it answer the question of why you should trust your vulnerable relative to their care? The Raikes's was particularly good, you get a picture of people with much experience of health care for elderly people. The other brochure I read simply gave me the names of the owners, nothing else. This, and the next point, was the reason I picked the Raikes.
4. I noticed the Raikes had gained the Investors in People award. My last employer had that, and were quite proud of it. To get it, an employer has to have a proper training scheme for staff, and this has to be independently checked. Obviously a good thing.
5. There seems to be some kind of government inspection done of homes. It gives ratings for different aspects of care (excellent, good, average, poor). Ask to see this for any place you visit. The Raikes hung theirs in the front entrance for visitors to read, whether obliged to or not I don't know. (They were rated good in every area, except for one excellent and one average).
Bit of a long reply, but I hope my own recent experience helps.
