IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : THE ROAD IS FINISHED!!! |
| bobber |
has anybody noticed quite a few brain donars still come to a halt when driving their cars over the line where new tarmac meets old by the shell garage? |
| carliol |
the road is not finished....they have forgotten to complete the entrance to Belton Road, where they cut the surface down and laid wet tar and yet didn't finish it off with tarmac..unbelievable! But the rest of it is great, long time coming but worth it.Now for the double yellow lines...... |
| pumbajunior |
were are they putting double yellows? |
| carliol |
I was only joking! |
| pumbajunior |
good i live on keighley road and parking is difficult enough with people going to the chippyand before anyone says use the bus/train i work shifts and niether are running at 3am |
| MATTSKI |
Why did they only stop at the shell garage when by far the worst bit of road is from there to the bridge pub? Also does anyone know if they are coming back to surface the total mess they made of the footpaths from the garage to the bypass including the extremely uneven large kerb stones that where once level? I doubt it, once again look after the car drivers and balls (blue or cream !!!)to the people who use the trains. i suppose in this world nowadays of where there's a blame there's a claim i could always earn a few bob, long may the uneven paths continue... |

quoteI pressume the chippy opened up after you started living at your property..... If not then don't move in to a property near a chippy and then complain that people use it.... |

Were Silsden Council ever told anything about the road resurfacing before it happened? Were they asked for suggestions such as widening the pavement? Remember how difficult it was to get a bit of paint put around the crossing island which was leathal (there wasn't the improved lighting at the time the island was put there). Bradford obviously didn't let on they were going to resurface the road and that was why they didn't want to paint the white lines. Do our Town Council have a clue what is happening in our town before it happens? If not why not? |
| alan |
this post has been edited 1 time(s) Yes they do "jojo". If YOU need to know anything from Bradford ask the Highways Dept, they are very helpful. Just simple people like you and me trying to do a job! But why don't you go along and ask the Town Council face to face? I bet they don't bite You can even ask for a public adjournmentFirst Thursday every month 7.30 are the main council meetings. |
| jojo |
So if the Town Council knew so much why wasn't the footpath widened on the golf range side of the road - where everyone walks when going to the station. It can only be people from Bradford who suggest it was alright to walk on the other side where the pavement is wider and cross at the Aire bridge when the pavement runs out - you can't see the traffic coming at that point! If the Silsden Council knew so much why has there been no information about what has been going on during the road resurfacing? I know they read this messageboard. I suppose we will have to wait another 3-4 weeks for a few white lines, but then perhaps they will be yellow! |
| gazzer |
Im sure you are right about the highways dept being described as "simple people" but dont put yourself down |
| alan |
this post has been edited 1 time(s) Go to the council and ask them "jojo". Next week at 7.30 is the next meeting Wink |
| pumbajunior |
quotei realise the chippy was there before i accept its difficult its fine as it is now but if they put double yellows there it would be impossible |
| ginjo |
In the T&A last night under "traffic report" it said silsden bridge for 7 weeks, does anyone know anything about this? Highways agency website says nothing about it. I will check with the paper to see if they made a mistake |

Alan, the answer to all our problems seems to be to attend a council meeting. I have looked back at the council’s published minutes for the last few months and I can’t see mentioned anywhere the council had been asked to suggest road improvements or comment on forthcoming improvements, such as the resurfacing Keighley Road.I can only conclude from the absence of information about Keighley Road in the council minutes that Bradford carried out the work without consulting the council, and from the lack of anyone knowing what was going on, Bradford didn’t even have the courtesy to inform Silsden Town Council it was carrying out the work. The stock answer (to anyone wanting to find out about things happening in our community) seems to be “anyone can call Bradford Transport Department” to find out what is going on with the work being carried out on Silsden’s roads, but shouldn’t our Town Council already know and be suggesting improvements which meet local needs rather than have “improvements” imposed upon us by Bradford. |

Thursday AM.They are digging up sections of the newly laid tarmac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| alan |
Perhaps it's to get the levels right for the tarmac and manholes "gazzer" ![]() They are now also white lining it, what are we gonna do when it's complete? We'll have to find something else to blame everybody else on |
| alan |
this post has been edited 2 time(s) "jojo" my point was it's very easy to sit here and criticise, it takes less than minutes to send a post! As you obviously feel so strongly about roads "jojo" why don't you contact one of our district councillors (i.e. Bradford who have the remit for maintaining roads) and let them know your feelings? Messers Mallinson, Kelly, and Naylor are always willing to listen and you'll find their contact details provided on this website. This is an excellent website but not the forum to inform the majority of Silsdeners what is going on! My criticism is that we look to blaming others for everything these days, i.e. the town council, Bradford Council, the government. We should take responsibility for doing things for ourselves for a change and maybe finding out for ourselves. If you really want to know what's going on get involved! My attitude to life has always been if I am willing to criticise I should also be willing to make the effort to do something about it! Of the 8,500 plus population of Silsden only 12 put themselves up for election to the town council! Less than 40% turned out to vote! Town councillors do not get paid, and most don't even claim minor petrol expenses! You could always become the reporter of town council matters on this website "jojo" by attending meetings and asking questions |
| jojo |
Alan, you have provided a typical politician’s answer and avoided my questions by changing the subject – I’ll try again with questions which require either a yes or no answer. Work carried out by Bradford 1. Are the council informed of work carried out in Silsden before the work is done? 2. Is the council given the opportunity to suggest changes to the work/schedule before the work is done? 3. Is the council kept informed of problems if the work runs over its scheduled time for completion? These are fairly basic questions but if our Town Council cannot answer YES what’s the point of having a Town Council! The council does a thankless task but I feel Bradford imposes changes on us without asking us what we want and perhaps if they did we would get the Silsden we require. |

this post has been edited 4 time(s) I suggest you read my reply carefully "jojo". Roads are not within the remit of the town or parish council, BUT they are consulted from time to time and were aware of the bridge works and resurfacing. You obviously missed that in the minutes you read! To please you this is a simple YES! BUT, I'll look forward to you asking the questions at the meeting next week "jojo" ![]() So "jojo" with your obvious interest I take it that you will now answer me with a simple "YES" that you will be contacting the district councillors re your comments on the road and improvements! At least one will be at the town council meeting. As regards your comment whether we need a town council I would say that considering the amount of times that town councillors are shot as the messengers and have their noses rubbed in the dirt over matters that are not of their making whilst trying to do their best for the town I am surprised there is one! Good job that one of the requisites for town councillors is that they have hides as thick as a rhino |
| pumbajunior |
quoteive just driven over it twice this evening and cant see were they have dug up again or is this next thursday? |
| betarick |
I saw them at this morning outside cricket club digging up that new tarmac! |
| alan |
And then "jojo" went silent! ![]() You not want to answer my question? |
| jojo |
Alan, some of us have to work and can't watch the internet all day. Which month did the subject of road re-surfacing come up in the minutes? |
| Grianan |
... And we even have white lines & road markings now! |
| pumbajunior |
quoteahh ok i was asleep till early afternoon (nightshift this week) |
| alan |
this post has been edited 4 time(s) "jojo" I also have to work, and am a single, widowed, parent who has just had a very major operation! That's why I can be on the internet for a very FEW weeks before I return to work. I would suggest that you re-read the minutes or ask the town councillors curteously at one of the meetings or e-mail the town clerk. I won't ask for an apology or thank-you, for my YES answer, WHICH was all you asked for. as I doubt that I'd get one! If you want to make unpleasant and ill-informed replies like your last one I will not discuss the matter further. |
| carliol |
is it not time to close this one down? after all, "The Road Is Finished". |
| alan |
I agree "carliol". |
| jojo |
Alan, I still can't find the Town Council minutes which mention the road works but perhaps they haven't been published yet. I didn't realise if Bradford decide to do something about the roads the TC have no control over what happens in Silsden , but now I know. I'm sorry if you took my comments personally, it was meant as a general comment about the Town Council/Bradford relationship. The TC should have more control over what happens to our community and should be consulted. I don't mean the Neighbourhood Forum meetings, which although is a step in the right direction is for the most part "lip service". Unfortunately I cannot attend a TC meeting due to other commitments, perhaps this debate will encourage others to take up the debate. Peter, it is time to close this as the road has now been finished. They haven't painted any yellow lines, I wonder if the football/cricket supporters will park on the pavement close to the traffic island? |
| alan |
this post has been edited 1 time(s) To quote "jojo" "Alan, some of us have to work and can't watch the internet all day." A general comment? I think not. For your information MOST town councillors have jobs and MAKE time amongst their personal committments. No worries I didn't expect an apology so I wasn't dissapponted! No further comment from me on this matter! |
