Topic : Support the new green-grocery |
|
| greenlanes |
Please, let's all do our best to support Silsden's new green-grocery shop (bottom of Bolton Road, opposite the library). I was in the shop today and thought the quality was terrific and most things really reasonably priced. Shops opening and thriving on this corner site would give a real lift to this part of town. Buying locally makes great sense - let's back these brave new ventures and try to keep the village centre alive. |

I will certainly give it a try, I did not even know it was there.Communication is a big part of the problem, maybe there will be some flyers sent out. I will tell anyone I meet |

It certainly is good to support any business in the village, but don't forget Fresh 'n' Fruity who deliver both British and Organic fruit and veg right to your door, we have been around now for nearly 18 months and are two Silsden 'ladies'!!! so we really are a 'local' business. We have a solid base of loyal and satisfied customers, you could be one of them ![]() See our Silsden.net advertisment for phone numbers, Dawn(Fruity) and Jane (Fresh) |

Which village are we talking about? |
|
| pgp001 |
I think we have already had this debate quite recently, some of us like to think of Silsden as a village even though it has a town hall and the status that goes with it. I for one prefer to think of village life rather than be a "towny" Phil |

I popped in today to say hello, they seem a nice couple who were there then. |
|
| ginjo |
I think they will struggle if they don't do a bit of marketing, the shop is barely noticeable, you would not know it was there.I know its early days yet. |

ifthe owners of the new greengrocers want to stay open and not be shut down maybe they will stop unloading at the front door and use there common sense and unload at the back, before somebody is hurt or even killed coming out of bell square, this is probably the most accident prone junction in silsden, today big van part on path part on road you have no chance of seeing anything coming up the town. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) This (parking dangerously close to a busy junction) is precisely why objections to the planning application for a take-away were raised...but the planning department weren't interested. I know delivery drivers have to park somewhere but honestly, have they never heard of common sense and sack-carts? Whilst I wish the new business every success I'll be surprised if it lasts, by all accounts Fodders produce was good and cheap but they still had to close. Why did the old green grocers on the corner close? (Fruit Bowl? was it) did they retire or just go out of business. |
|
| ginjo |
I think it was because they could not make a living, when co-op expanded it took some of their business It is a shame because it was a good shop and in a prime location with plenty of room for outside display which is what a greengrocers needs. |

The main issue at stake is that our village centre will close down and die if people in Silsden continue to prefer the easy option of a one-stop supermarket shop and fail to support local businesses. Looking into Silsden shops at the moment is a pretty miserable activity - they're all obviously struggling, with so few customers around. The new greengrocery should be full of folks (the quality and variety of the fruit and veg is really excellent, and no more expensive, sometimes less so, than the supermarkets). So should the pet shop, with a new young couple running it, keen and committed. So should our local pharmacies..you could go on and on. Silsden has had a vibrant and varied 'Main Street' for the past 130 years - is it our generation that's going to lose it? |

If you don't sell beer, fast food or stuff for a quid, things don't look good in the long term i'm afraid. That goes for any town/village. |

quoteThe main issue at stake is that our village centre will close down and die... I think this is hyperbole to claim the village center will close down and die just because some types of business have not been able to make a go of it. |

i think silsden main street needs our support otherwise it will fizzle out. its already lost much of its charm |

Silsden has had a vibrant and varied 'Main Street' for the past 130 years - is it our generation that's going to lose it? One of the main problems now is the way in which people work nowadays, myself and Mrs Mattski leave our house at 7 in the morning and are rarely back before 7 at night, also saturdays are taken up with commitments elsewhere, I would love to shop in Silsden and when i have the odd day off i do, but my odd day off spending will not support our high street, yes it's sad, yes i would love it to change, but thats just the way it is and I'm sure its the same for many families. The post after the one above mentions why take aways, pubs, and the co-op thrive? just look at the opening hours. Silsden is expanding with generations of Leeds/bradford commuters thanks to the excellent rail service, and demographics nowadys have shifted towards both parties in the household going out to work. Once again, sad as it is, gone (or at least going) are the days when the housewife looked after the house and shopped locally during the week. Silsden is not unique in seeing this pattern |

Correct Mattski. That's exactly my problem getting to shops in Silsden when they are open! |
|
| greenlanes |
Oh, dear! Sounds like some people may have a few problems with work/life balance! Perhaps one day there might be some little Mattskis or you can no longer work those 12 long hours a day or are getting old and not as mobile, in which case you will need a community there for you, with shops and services, local organisations and a clear spirit of community. Research shows that its the big housing connurbations without resources of their own which throw up the worst social problems. Thank goodness, Silsden is nowhere near that stage but we have to work at it by supporting a viable local community. A big topic to arise from thoughts about a small greengrocery! |

Work life balance whats that ?? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

change it into a curry house might do a bit of trade then joking apart veg shops have no chance in Silsden? David Bushfield had the best one ever top man David but since then loads have tried and all have failed. As a shopping village its over next to go will be one or two of the local pubs village life is all but over in Silsden and you all know it. |

Demise of the village is down to the Planners turning it into a souless dormitory for communters. All the housing developments should have been built nearer Bradford and Leeds where the jobs are, and not ruined a village community. |

Silsden is a town and civil parish situated in West Yorkshire, England. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silsden |

It's going off the thread slightly, but if Silsden is souless, have you visited Bradford lately. We had the decidedly awful task of driving through recently. Souless isn't even near to describing the place. What a feeling when we drove along the dual carriageway and had a first glimpse of our little haven. I for one would not like to live anywhere near a City, even the films on Tele' give me the eebie geebies. |

Some of us were born and brought up in what we called a village never mind it having a town hall, etc etc., |
|

some of us born and bred here always considered silsden a village irrespective of it having a 'town hall' etc, etc.,,small is beautiful. . |
|
| coby1 |
when most of the people of silsden worked in the local mills and keighley factorys the shops were busy and now no mills or large factorys so not many local shops end of story |
|
| alan |
That's the sad fact of life coby 1. The trouble I find is that by the time I can get free to go to local shops on Saturdays they are closed! |
|
| Yaz |
We should support this new shop. I think they have all fresh fruit & veg for cheaper rates + staff is friendly as well. I think everyone has to pay a visit to this shop and ask our friends to do the same. GOOD LUcK with your new business. |
|
| alan |
Anyone know what it's opening times are? |
|
| Loafer |
As far as I'm concerned, those shops that insist on closing Saturday afternoons shouldn't expect my support. |
|
| ginjo |
when I popped in last week they said they were getting some leaflets printed. Some of the stuff looked very fresh but some did not, also not much in when I called but they are only just getting started so may improve.Did not thin it was any cheaper than co-op although they had some nice large eggs for 99p for 6. |
|
| alan |
Times anyone?????????????? |
|
| liz |
I popped in yesterday I was impressed by the service that was provided. I think they have good manner of customer care. We should all support our local shop. I think they have remarkable prices. |
|
| Yaz |
I totally agree with liz. I popped in this morning and I found everything I wanted and the bill was not much either + everything was fresh as well. I will say this again that everyone should visit this shop & give them plenty of business so they can provide us with the best service. Customer service is splendid. Keep up with good work we are with you. |
|
| alan |
I will when someone tells me what times they open. Does anybody know? |
|
