I'd take it back to the screen shop first and ask them what they'd done. |

quoteI'd take it back to the screen shop first and ask them what they'd done. this is spot on. if it's a simple hardware fix, like a replacement screen, there is no reason why they should do anything at all with the information on the hard-drive. if they won't help then post back here and we can talk about recovery options. |

Its my laptop in question!! Have taken it back n they said there's no reason for this as hardrive should not have been touched for a new screen, said they could fix it but couldn't give a price, thought if it w just re-installing stuff i could do that without spending anything! |

they shouldnt charge for that ? they need to restore it to how it was, for free ? |

but as the computer has gone back to the house they will dispute its anything they have done |

well now you have to decide if there was anything on the drive that you wanted to keep, ie photos, music, CVs etc If not then yea it's an easy fix, just re-install your OS, if you have re-install media (A win CD, or linux? lol) If you do have stuff you want to recover then it could be tricky(er). This www.howtogeek.com/howto/15761/recover-data-like-a-forensics-expert-using-an-ubuntu-live-cd/ is the best instructions I've found, they are long and detailed but do work a treat. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) quotethey shouldnt charge for that ? they need to restore it to how it was, for free ? yes, but.. quotebut as the computer has gone back to the house they will dispute its anything they have done sounds like this is the case... That's why I always remove hard-drives before I ship stuff back to Dell, HP etc for repair. Lesson to learn, when you pick your stuff up, test it before you leave the shop. Where did you take it to incidentally? |

If you have files you require retreiving then pop it round to me and I will try get those off before you format.... Are you getting any messages such as a file is missing no boot disk |

Did you get this resolved - Mags mentioned it to me in the pub and said you might give me a ring. |
