The other carpet and general home furnishing shop is Hansons at the bottom of Skipton Road, never open but always there.
p.s. I forgot the insurance brokers 2 off and the accountants 1 off.

Not as many shops as we use to have, still it makes places like Steeton look a bit dead, wonder if Steeton'ers use our shops ?

what would silsdeners think to say a market ? if some of the stall holders in skipton lose their places because of the arcade trying to get rid of them, would it be an idea to grab them for silsden? they could bring in extra trade for local businessess and be the sellers of the items we're lacking in, clothes, fruit and veg etc etc |

well,it seems to work for places like settle. I know quite a few people that have a run out to settle on market day, the question is how do we go about setting it up if it's what the people of silsden want?in fact i should start a new thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

It would be nice to see a monthly farmers market on the Bell Square car Park, there are plenty of local food producers in the area so how do we get it organised ??

"except perhaps a decent supermarket"
What is wrong with the Cooperative? It might not be a mega ASDA but at least you can get most of what you want. At least it is a cooperative and not a multinational. |

Nowt wrong with the Co-op at all!
As for the market, how's about closing some of the unadopted roads round the Co-op for the odd day, would also help pay for their maintenance. |

Are we going to close Hillcrest Avenue for the market then? That would have the added benefit of creating a captive market! |

Personally I think Hillcrest Avenue should be made into a toll road and the fees should go to the residents being asked to pay for the upkeep of the road and pavement.
Better still it should be adopted by Bradford |

The sad situation 'Fred' is that despite all the noises made by the town council and many others we do not seem to get any closer to Hillcrest being adopted.
But I would suggest that someone looks at the drains, that's a serious problem waiting to happen! |

Wahiba,
The Co-op has the monopoly in Sisden, I accept that it's the best we've got, but its overpriced the "fresh" veg etc isn't. The service is adequate at the best. If we had a better supermarket in the town perhaps more people would shop here rather than travel to Keighley, Ilkley or Skipton ! |

no thanks Alan, it's quite difficult enough getting up and down Hillcrest with all the cars parked outside the co-op, without making it any harder. I'll need a 4x4 soon so I can go up and down the little dirt road past the deli. |

the sevice in the co-op is at very best adequate & at worst down right appalling & the quality of the 'fresh' veg is disgusting. i avoid the place if at all possible & use booths if i'm travelling home that way. even the co-op outlet at riddlesden is better than silsden co-op. it only keeps going 'cos it has a captive market
the one outlet silsden is desparate for is a greengrocer. it was a sad day when paddys finally closed. |

Be careful of what you wish for!
In the time I have lived in Silsden there were two greengrocers (one for only a short period) but the expansion of the Co-op put them out of business. The Co-op can stay open for much longer than small shops.
There seems to be a general underlying feeling that the Co-op should have some competition, if this could be provided by a market that would be excellent.
For those that think another supermarket would be a good idea then think again. Supermarkets provide lots of things, the same things our small local shops provide, how long do you think they would survive with a supermarket war?
Support our local shops (and the Post Office).
and why are there so many hairdresser in Silsden? |

What a load of b----s. The fresh food in the CoOp is much the same as elsewhere, and certainly no worse than Booths or even Waitrose.
At least the CoOp cannot be screwing down to many farmers being one of the biggest farmers in the UK.

I have to agree one hundred percent with 'Fred' and 'wahiba'
I would much rather have the Co-op than the possible alternatives! Apart from the very odd grumpy part-time staff I have always found the service to be excellent.
Indeed service in all the shops etc I use in the town is always excellent.
We should all do our best to support local businesses and the last thing we should even dream of in our town is one of the 'big-boy' supermarkets, or even one of the 'little-boy' supermarkets!
Though I will confess to not using local takeaways these days because of the way they treat the town, but there again that's a whole other story |

yup the fruit n veg in co op is fine better than morrisons/asda (which in mine & HFs) experiance lasts about 2-3 days
i do use the take aways some times georges place we use a bit ive had burgers from birdy's not tried the rice bowl layzeez or the pizza place (i make my own pizzas from scratch which are just as good) and the crazy chef doesnt look inviting
as ive said before when we were looking in the area silsden/steeton/skipton/sutton/cross hills/glusburn silsden was the number 1 option as its not too big like skipton but has everything you need |

A quick update, change the number of wedding shops to 1 off, the little one has closed due the the owner increasing the population !
But the good news (hopefully) is that it is shortly due to reopen as a Greengrocers.
So Ms Fraggle, it looks like your trips out of Silsden can shortly come to an end |

If it does become a green grocer then I will give it a go, it is on the right side of town. While I am generally a CoOperative (not Co Op - market research determined that the full word was actually more positive and inviting) supporter, the lack of a divi annoys me. Evidently if one makes it to one of the meetings then one gets vouchers or whatever. If Tesco et al can copy the divi system with their loyalty cards I have never really understood why the cooperative cannot do the same. |
