IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Do any older readers remember the equipment that used to be in the park? The slide, the spider's web, rocking horse (Bonnie Bright-Eyes), the ocean wave and, best of all, the Banger? All bedded into nice, firm concrete and all potentially lethal.
I remember falling off the banger . Must have been catapulted about 30 feet away. I was so badly winded I thought I was going to die.

When it was double-banging you could look up and see the springs at the top under full compression. Then the swing itself took the strain and you could see the steel bars flexing. A marvellous machine, obviously designed by people who had survived aerial bombardment and trench warfare, and had no concept of Health and Safety.
When we were in Mrs Belton's class in the Methodist Chapel schoolrooms we used to go on for an hour after school before going home for tea. Not allowed on during school breaks!
