Topic : Silsden schools merger |
|
Peter |
From a news item in the Keighley News quoteHow is this going to work, there is not enough space? Does this mean a new school will be built for September 2017 for all the children requiring primary education in Silsden? More information news.silsden.net/news/silsden-schools-merger |

I may be wrong, but if I read the comment in the article made by councillor Naylor correctly? All they have done here is to decide that both schools will become one, on a new site yet to be determined. |

So this means that Silsden parents will again have a similar problem with the September 2016 intake, as the merger will not take place until 2017? What a shambles.. someone tell me I'm wrong.... This should be a simple problem to solve, surely? |

quoteDexter, yes simple but expensive! and has we all know Bradford only like to spend money in Bradford. It's not expensive to do an administrative merger, solve the 2016 intake problem, and then deal with a new school after that. The 2 schools could operate as one entity from 2 premises, there would be staff cost savings, and the school would be ready to move into new premises when they are built. In the short term it would save money. |

Dexter, I think you are on the right lines. I believe Bradford are close to ridding themselves of the 3 stage infant / junior / middle schools system and conforming with the primary / secondary system. The move to a primary school with two campuses but one set of management and governors, plus the ability for teaching and support staff to flit between the two, given their close proximity, would seem a logical way forward. It would also terminate the infant / junior system in Silsden. Looking further ahead, I believe new schools have to be self-funding now but will stand correcting on that point. If that is the way forward, the two present schools are ripe for being sold for housing development, in which case contributing towards Silsden's quota of 1,250'ish new homes and reducing the amount of new green sites required to meet the quota. If potential sites are already in the ownership of relevant authorities, the overall cost of a new school build can be significantly reduced. |

How is all this merging going to help, apart from converting one head teachers study into a classroom? Silsden school will still be oversubscribed. There simply are not enough places. |

peter as usual Cllr mallinsons gob runs away, if he worked or even lived in the ward he may have been party to recent meetings about the new school, or if he attended meetings for which he is handsomely paid he would not be so far behind in the knowledge of whats going on. council officers have assured me that the money for the new school is in place and after negotiations regarding the purchase of additional lands are complete an application for planning will be submitted ,watch this space. |

If they are both oversubscribed, that will leave them with less wriggle room and surely help the case for a new school - fast! Whether they are merged or not perhaps doesn't make much difference if they are both oversubscribed, so why not merge, in preparation for the new school? |

If skippy says it's going to happen, he knows it will, and that's great news for the town at last. It will take time to build, and we need to consider the parents who will lose out in 2016, just because of failure to "merge" the 2 schools in the meantime. Can it not be an administrative merger to help those parents, with the nuts and bolts following on? And a lot of other things can then be put together to speed up the new school being operational on day 1. September 2017 is a long time away. |

There are 3 secondary schools planned for next year and 3 for 2017. If you think Silsden will have a new school for September 2017 I think you will probably end up being very disappointed. The merger could take place this academic year which will provide significant additional funding with the reduction in senior staffing costs, as well as the school benefiting from the funding formula that provides additional funding for schools that operate over more than one site. The additional funding could be allocated to additional teaching staff for September 2016 and the acquisition of some temporary teaching accommodation to address the present shortfall - not ideal I appreciate as any outside buildings will restrict the outside space further, but I am sure that is a better alternative for parents in the town that are having to send there children elsewhere. Skippy, I would insist that Bradford Council fully documents the availability of funding for the scheme as there seems to be understandings, and comments from councillors, rather than hard proven facts of what is actually being planned. |

skippy, where is the land that the council are negotiating over, give us a clue, north, south, east or west? |

All this proves is that there is a lot going on behind closed doors, with poor communication with the public, who after all are paying for everything. Comments from davidaloud are sensible and thought through, and should be easy to implement. But nothing will happen until the councils get into gear, which may take some time.... and parents will continue to worry whether their children will get a place at a school in their own town. |

This document from the Sykes Lane planning application for 51 houses makes interesting reading: news.silsden.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/15_03871_MAF-CONSULTEE_COMMENT_SUBMITTED_ONLINE-4320066-6.doc Therefore as is show in the tables above (see document, link above), there are no available places in the reception class and year 1. The pupil forecast predicts places will be required at least in reception over the next 5 years, but also a shortfall for the current year 2 cohort. The secondary schools which are reasonably accessible from the development are all 11-18 schools are University academy Keighley which has spare capacity and South Craven College in North Yorkshire. |
