This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

I hope they do well, and the style of food they are serving sounds good.

You would have thought they'd have changed the signs on the outside before they opened though. still says Italian ???

Dog and Gun at Glusburn! four of us went on Friday evening, great food, drinks, two courses £55, well worth it we thought.

I find the trouble with lots of restaurants is that they seem to expect only groups of adults all paying for themselves to go.

What I mean is they price their meals such that I wouldn't mind going in a group and all paying just for one person's meal/drinks, eg starter, main and a drink or two for £25. But that isn't very nice on my wallet if I want to take my teenage kids and wife out for a family meal as I'm suddenly faced with paying out £100 for an evening out (well a couple of hours tops really).

I think the Beeches/Toby Carvery have got it just about right price-wise and food/service is good too. Four of us can have Carvery, Desert and soft drinks for £35-ish.

Might have to try the Dog n Gun at those prices though.

I agree with Jonno that the Toby Carvery is good value for money. That is why, whatever day of the week you go, it is always full.

I also think the Purple Garlic is good value for money as we often have a takeaway from them and the waiting time is no longer than 30mins and the food is piping hot.

Regarding The Grouse they haven't got there marketing right. Who, in their right mind, would open a business and not advertise it. I would be shouting it from the rooftops so as many people would know as possible. At least you would expect them to put a board outside saying: 'WE ARE NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS'.

Having had some experience of working in the trade when u open a new restraunt its wiser not to advertise all in one go, they tend to stay open for two to four weeks without advertising because you need to get your food right, prep time right and best of all have the right staff, so they almost always wait two to four weeks, just my experience .... Then again if its a first time businessman / woman ....

I have tried dog and gun a couple of times on reccomendation, I would not go again, food mediocre and far too busy.I think a lot of places get complacent and live on their reputations also to some extent people think its great because its so busy ie it must be good because its always busy, the number of times that has proved to be the case, beeches carvery and grouse at oakworth being prime examples.Hopefully the grouse will concentrate on quality not quantity and £5 for starters is about the going rate now in a decent restaurant, well worth it if the food service and ambiance are right.

I was talking to the Chef today at the Grouse who told me that the owners have already a restaurant in Pudsey and you can get an idea of the menu by looking on their website which is
www.114thearchrestaurant.co.uk. I think it's quite upmarket for Silsden but there again it all depends on what you want to pay.

Enough free publicity, I wish you well and hope the "new" Grouse is successful.

If diners like what they see, please post your findings.
