This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Like many others I used the excellent Christmas Fayre as the first opportunity to check out the changes to the town hall. For these tight times there seems to have been a reasonable job done. The open beams up stairs certainly look good.happy :)

Just don't look at the grime still caking the windows or the paint flaking off the windows less than a month after they have had some paint thrown at them!

I went to the Town Hall on Sunday morning about10am to have a quick look round as I was on my way to an exhibition at Harrogate. I went to have a look at the room which was the old council chambers, and now to be the new Library. I was approached by a lady who said she was 92yrs, and was walking with a stick. She complained that the lift was not working.

I went to look at the lift and there was a small piece of paper stuck on saying "lift not in use". I then walked upstairs to the upper floor and found the lift at this floor had the door open. I then had a conversation with someone I know who was there with his wife. She too was walking with a stick, and the husband said"it's ridiculous this, spending all that money and the lift doesn't work".
We proceeded to walk down the stairs, he walked backwards facing her in case she fell and I walked behind her.

I left about 10.40am so I don't know what happened after that.
What I want to know is how come the lift wasn't working at that time after there had been the big publicity regarding the Town Hall in all the local papers. The main wording had been from cllr. Mallinson stating that Silsden people would be delighted with the improvements and inviting them to go have a look round and "have a ride in the new lift". Was the lift faulty or had it just been switched off.

Silsden Gala was booked well in advance to hold its Christmas market. The town hall is behind schedule but was opened for our market even though not everything was finished including the lift. This was explained to us the day before the market but there was nothing we could do about it.Everything shoud be ready for the official opening. I hope it dint stop you enjoying the event too much.

Thank you for this explanation, as I said I was only having a quick look round as I was on my way to an event so it didn't affect me. I will explain this to the couple I know. The husband said that he had only taken his wife because she had seen the article in the paper and was expecting to use the lift.

A lesson I learned a while ago. Do not believe a word Coun Mallinson ever says.

Perhaps the real reason was if people used the lift who were unable to walk up the stairs, and there was an emergency, there would be nobody qualified to help with an emergency evacuation of the upper floor. sad :(sad :(

The rules governing the use of the Town Hall now say ONLY two people who can't walk at a time allowed upstairs!
The proper disabled toilets are upstairs!
