This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Hey, I read today about the new Silsden H C scheduled for rebuild this year. Twice the number of GP's (10) but probably the same output, give you grief if you want out of hours surgery (5.30 - 7pm), refuse you MRI's and give you any antibiotics (which are bad) just to get rid of you. What is the benefit (apart from lining their pockets at tax payers expense).

Must say in the defence of our Health Centre, I can't praise them highly enough. Have NEVER had a bad experience there, far from it. The dealings that both myself and other half have had, have been nothing but good.
I was there yesterday and remarked to t'other arf about how busy the ladies on reception were.
Having worked in a Medical capacity, there's 2 sides to every story. Believe me, retirement was a very welcome time. I realise there are genuine patients, but there are also some that no matter what will be awkward.
So Good luck the team at Silsden, I'm sure it is long overdue for them.

Got to say not got a problem with the doctors but I have had so with the girls in admin. Prescriptions not being issued/wrong quantities etc. And the method of booking appointments just seem silly.

However they are pushed for space there - and it was supposed to be rebuilt over 5 years ago but funding was cut....

Wilma certainly needs a medical intervention from the new Health Centre - major surgery to remove that massive chip on her shoulder!
First she was having a go at local stores (hard working folk trying to earn a daily crust)and now its the local docs and nurses!
Stop moaning, Wilma, and count your lucky stars that fate has landed you in a lovely comfortable spot like Silsden, and not in Haiti.

I have had huge problems with the surgery over the years, not the doctors! the doctors have been really good, but the policy and attitude of the staff has been dangerous to the health of my children more than once,. in fact one time i complained and spoke to the surgery manager, we had to rush our 2 year child to airedale because the stupid idiots would not let us come in to the surgery because we did not have an appointment.

My children have to attend the silsden surgery simply because of where we live.

I have to say that I do not rate the doctors in silsden, one or two are ok but generally speaking I found them a waste of time. All my family have encountered incompetence with them and unfortunately a couple of good friends have passed away due to slow diagnosis of cancers.Like someone said, they send you away with painkillers, antibiotics whatever and that goes on for several weeks before they actually get to grips with the cause of the problem.Instead of going all round the houses surely it would be better to assume the worst first and do the tests to discount that before prescribing lots of different tablets. When I have any problems now, the health centre is the last place I will go.
I must praise Airedale hospital though, I think they are fantastic.

In answer to poononga, it isn't the staff on the desk that makes the surgery policy, bear in mind, they are only doing what they are told!!!!So really, they are not idiots, only following orders.
As spoken by someone with first hand experience.

My findings are, that if you approach people with some degree of calmness, and explain in detail the problem, without loosing it, you will get the help or information you require. As I said in my previous post, there are always patients that know what THEY want, not neccessarily what is physically possible.

I totally disagree, one of my children was choking, i called in panic to see a doctor, who would be calm in that situation? I was not rude, i explained that my child was having choking fits and that we needed to see a doctor, (not too dificult to sort out because its a doctors surgery!!)
The people were totally unhelpful and the staff were rude!, i took the child to airedale, (where they are very helpful and understanding) The doctor at airedale could not believe his lugs when i told him that the health centre refused to see my child until i made an appointment.

Im not on my own here, i know lots of people who have had problems with the attitude of the surgery. No its not the Doctors at all. Maybe they are being told what to do by a higher rank. But if someone told me that i had to turn away people that were at immediate risk of serious health problem i think that i would be telling where to go and using my better judgement.

I really have no respect for the service they offer at all, i complained and they brushed it under the carpet.
I myself go to xhills surgery and they are so friendly to everyone and give a much higher service!

Wasn't good that my neighbour got brushed off with antiinflamatory tablets and said that they had pulled a muscle and was sent to a Physio. The elderly mother didn't agree and paid for her to get her an xray, she had secondary bowel cancer and died within 2 months. I'm not saying this is just Silsden, after all they are GP's GENERAL Practitioners, this is obvious. From my point of view, they always try to give me appts during working hours which doesn't go down well at work as this would mean me taking a morning or afternoon off work. I fax prescriptions which they claim they never received so I say to them stand by the fax machine and see if it comes through and surprise surprise it appears. I ran a locum doctors agency for years so I know how they work!!!I appreciate there are time wasters too.

In the last 10 years I have been registered at two other practices and both were better.Treatment was better, tests were sent for sooner,at silsden you seem to get fobbed off until you have come back with the same problem several times. This is a personal opinion but I have spoken to many people who feel the same.

we've had good experiences, eg my wife being referred immediately to a specialist when she thought it was something very minor that turned out to be serious,

and we've had bad experiences, eg urine samples being sent for the wrong type of tests due to receptionists not listening properly to what you are saying,

or, refusing to book an evening appointment for the following day, even though there were free slots, because "We only book appointments for the actual day we're on, so if you call in the morning we'll book it for you then...", stupid, stupid, stupid, had that one out with the practise manager and surpise, surprise she was suddenly able to do it there and then.

So... doctors, pretty good, especially, Dr Clements, admin team, pretty bad.

I had seriously been thinking about transferring to the Silsdenpractice, but after reading this I am beginning to have second thoughts. One thing I am not clear on is say if I woke up one morning feeling ill and rang up to ask for an appointment, would they tell me there and then when they could fit me in, or would I have to ring up every morning.

I think every practice has good and bad points and not everyone can be happy with them all at the same time. I have phoned several times for an appointment on the day I'm ill and been told non available, very annoying but once you ask for a home visit they seem to find one. I've also asked to book an appointment every tuesday throughout the winter just in case we are illlaugh :D they didn't find that one funny sad :(
I do think the majority of the docs and staff are very nice and good at the jobs.

Have nothing but praise for all staff there, and the receptionists are great! (don't know any of them so no favouritism) I have been here 6 years and compared to other practices I have used they are wonderful. Whenever I ring or call, they are really pleasant and try to help. At my previous place, they would avoid you if you came to the window and were officious over the phone. Thank you Silsden Health Centre. I'm a big fan.

Over the last five years since I've started using them I can only say I've had excellent service and treatment in all aspects. I've had cancers and separate tumours and the help and advice has just been the best.

Family has used 'em for 23 years bandnwire, minor problems that's all, but they have helped us through some very difficult times, especially Dr Clements and the sadly missed Dr Heppell!

No problems with appointments at all, would have no problem recommending them at all happy :)

I do think most of the docs have been good over the years Personally
Dr Clements - really hurt me when she was checking to see how far down my last baby was sad :(
Dr Heppell - an absolute God, fancied by both old and young and an absolutely fantastic doc, so good appointments with him were like rocking horse poo razz :p
Dr Walker - Never had a prob with her although the last time i took my son she really wasn't that 'warm' but we all have off days
Dr Donlevy - lovely and has really helped me through a tough time
Dr Smith and Dr Milborne have also been very good when we've seen them.

Have been here in Silsden for 20 yrs, yes sometimes there are problems but I do believe the service overall is excellant. I've changed Dr's dependant on the illness but have always found one to suit the occasion. Our present one, although obviously v busy has been very supportive and helpful. You only get 10mins each app, so it's difficult for them too. I just don't know how they keep up with so many patients with so little time to diagnose and there are budget restraints to think of too. I am so thankful for our health service, though not perfect, is doing a pretty good job. If you want a longer app you can ask for one but I am considerate of this dependant on my illness. Enjoy it while it last, you may have to deal with private health in the future!!

www.silsdengrouppractice.co.uk/ if ypu want to make any comments about your treatment there, or join the patient forum they are always banging on about.

I don't have any complaints. I have had a lot of cause to see them lots over the last two years. My problems have been with the places I have been referred to, not with the doctors there.

As for the rebuild the building is old, tired and most likely not fit for purpose. A GP I used to work for had a similar building and it was rebuilt and it was well worth the inconvenience of having it done. Wouldn't it be nice to have, and doesn't the town deserve a shiny new state of the art Health Centre.

... by the way I do not work for Silsden health Centre or the PCT before you ask.
